Richard Jarnagin Obituary

Jarnagin, Richard C.



Richard C. Jarnagin, 84, (1930 â€" 2015) passed away at home on Monday, August 3, 2015 after a brief illness. Richard grew up in Dallas, TX. He attended North Texas Agricultural College and graduated in 1952 from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. There he was also a member of the Air Force R.O.T.C. After graduation, he married his sweetheart of many years, Patsy Sue Hatchel. They moved to Dayton, OH where Richard served in the Air Force from 1953 - 1955. Upon discharge from active duty, Richard and Patsy moved to New Haven, CT, where Richard completed his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Yale University. In 1958 they moved to Chapel Hill, NC where Richard taught at the University of North Carolina until 1996. Richard was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and spent a year abroad at the University of Leicester in Great Britain. Upon retirement, they moved to Albuquerque where Richard had previously taken a sabbatical year in 1978 to work at Sandia Labs. In retirement, Richard and Patsy were active members of the community serving as volunteers with the YMCA and active members of the ball room dance community. Richard served on the Board of Directors for USA Dance in Albuquerque and served as the club D.J. for several years. An avid photographer, Richard and Patsy made annual trips to Yellowstone Park to enjoy nature and take wildlife and landscape photographs.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patsy H. Jarnagin; two sons, Kurt and Forest; daughters-in-law, Alisha and Tamara; and two granddaughters, Karen and Helen. All services will be family only.
