Eberhard Uhlenhuth Obituary

Uhlenhuth, Eberhard Dr.

Prominent Professor of Psychiatry dies after 63 year medical career.

Eberhard H. Uhlenhuth died Tuesday June 7, 2016. He was 88 years old. Uhli was born in Baltimore, MD, the only child of Eduard and Elisabeth Uhlenhuth. He graduated from Yale University Phi Beta Kappa in 1947 with a BS in Chemistry and received his MD degree (AOA) from Johns Hopkins University in 1951.

He interned at Harborview Hospital in Seattle and there met his future wife, Helen Lyman. They married 6 months later and moved to Baltimore, where Uhli was a psychiatric resident at Johns Hopkins and then served on the faculty there. He garnered his first of many research grants in 1958. He became an assistant professor in 1959 and an associate professor in 1968.

Uhli continued his academic medical career at the University of Chicago, becoming a full professor in 1973 and Acting Chair of the department of psychiatry from 1983-1985. Helen's health prompted a move to the University of New Mexico where he served as full professor and later attained the rank of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry in 2005. He continued to work at the University even after "retirement."

He was passionate about medical research and the training of young psychiatrists. He wrote scores of articles, was elected President of the American College of Neuropsychopharmicology and served on numerous editorial boards.

Throughout his life, he maintained other interests including hiking, photography and classical music. His wife Helen died in 2008. He is survived by his three children: Kim Wagner of Philadelphia, Karen Uhlenhuth of Kansas City, and Eric Uhlenhuth of Louisville, Ky., as well as eight grandchildren.

Uhli was a gentle, gracious and intellectual man, deeply loved for his thoughtfulness and dedication. His family and many others will miss him greatly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent for the Uhlenhuth Research Professorship to the UNM Foundation www.unmfund.org Please visit our guestbook for Uhli at www.FrenchFunerals.com French-University 1111 University Blvd. NE 505-843-6333.

Uhli was a special person and friend. Along with the late Mitchell Balter they help me greatly when I decided to start the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology. He also helped me create the Balter award to honor our dear mutual colleague. When I spoke to Uhli in early mMay, he said he was dying. I could hardly believe it then and I still cannot believe it now. Uhli will always be remembered as a kind, generous, gentle, and thoughtful person -- my condolences go out to his family. Regrettably I never met them.

Uhli was a dear and loving friend to both George and me. George and Uhli first met at medical school and maintained their friendship for 69 years. Times spent with Uhli were always special occasions for us. George died on January 28, 2016, and, despite Uhli's own health problems, he offered me great comfort and caring. Uhli was a very special man, and I will be forever grateful for the privilege of knowing him.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.
