Cpl. Jason Jarrard (Vantrease) Corbett, 23, died Jan. 15, 2007, of injuries sustained when his military unit came in contact with enemy forces during combat operations in Karmah, Iraq.
A memorial service will be at 2 pm Saturday at St. John United Methodist Church in Anchorage. Pastor Dave Beckett will officiate. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 at Fort Richardson.
Interment was in Highland Cemetery in Casper, Wyo., with military rites accorded by the Natrona County United Veterans' Council and the Wyoming Army National Guard.
Cpl. Corbett was born March 18, 1983, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Megan and David Gould. He moved to Casper with his mother in 1984.
As a youngster, he attended Fairdale Elementary, Centennial Junior High and graduated from Kelly Walsh High School in 2001. While in school, Jason was active in track, football and basketball. Cpl. Corbett was baptized at First Christian Church in 1995 and was active in worship and volunteered for summer Vacation Bible School.
After high school, he attended Casper College, where he studied biology, before joining the U.S. Army in May 2004. He attended boot camp in Fort Benning, Ga., where he also graduated from airborne training.
In November 2004, Cpl. Corbett arrived in Alaska, where he was assigned to the 1-501 Parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Richardson.
Cpl. Corbett enjoyed fishing for salmon, hunting, hiking, biking, snowboarding and sports. While stationed in Alaska, Jason met the love of his life, Amanda Dodson. They enjoyed being in the great outdoors, especially fishing and hunting together. Jason and Amanda attended church together at St. John United Methodist Church, where they planned to be married when he returned from Iraq.
His family wrote: "Jason was proud to serve his country. He was such a strong person and a hard worker. It didn't matter what the task was, if it needed to be done and Jason was the one who had to do it, he did whatever he had to do to make it happen. Jason was admired and respected by his commanding officers and the soldiers in his company, some of whom remarked he always had a smile on his face."
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Megan and Ken Schafer of Casper; brother, Jonathan Vantrease of El Monte, Calif.; stepbrothers, Brandon and Kelly Schafer of Casper; grandparents, Mary Lynn Corbett of Kemmerer, Wyo., Pat Corbett of Cascabel, Ariz., Frieda Schafer of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Bobby and Inez Gould of Ada, Okla.; aunts and uncles, Laurie Longtine of Casper, Geoff Corbett of Buffalo, Wyo., and Gary and Pam Schafer of Cheyenne, Wyo.; cousin, Genoveva Mendoza of Casper; and goddaughter, Jaidyn Dietz of Casper.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James A. Corbett, and his great-grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Casper College Foundation, where a memorial scholarship is being established in Jason's honor: Jason Corbett Memorial Scholarship, Casper College Foundation, 125 College Dr., Casper, WY 82601.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Corbett Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in Afghanistan. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one, Jason J. Corbett US Army Specialist. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Hello,
I represent PRAYER SHAWLS 4 FALLEN SOLDIERS (PS4FS), an organization that since October 2007 has sent over 2,800 prayer shawls to military families who have lost a loved one. We are an organization of over 240 groups from all over the country. We make every effort to reach families even when post cards are returned after they have moved. Would you kindly send me a contact email/address so that we may send a loving hand-made prayer shawl to the family? Thank you!

Over 1,400 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Jason, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Jason was an extremely great friend of mine. Even though as the years past, we drifted apart and went our seperate ways. As he joined the Army and became a great soldier, I joined the Navy and also served in Iraq. Jason was the only one out of Brandon, himself and I that actually signed up for that reason. He wasnt a very big guy, but he had the courage and heart of a man that was 10 foot tall and bullet proof. I had the priveledge of living with Jason for a little. While we were both attending college and playing softball together. There was never a dull moment while Jason was around. He was a great person, on or off the field and in or out of the classroom. I still remember colliding with Jason as we were both going for a ball that was hit shallow in the outfield. He was definitly taken from us way to early and there is not a day that goes by that I wish him back. Jason will always be remembered and most of all missed. I seen Jasons family at the funeral and I am still truely sorry for the loss of not only a great soldier, but a great friend to all. Thank you for the priviledge that I had in my life to be introduced to your wonderful son. God Bless and take care.

I last spoke to my son on Jan. 16 & he sounded 'down'. All he would say was that a guy in his group had been killed - he wouldn't, or couldn't, talk much about it. He never told me anything that would worry me. But then I found out later that Jason had been his gunner in previous patrols but not this one, & that Jason was responding to a call to rescue my son & 10 others. I've not spoken to him since that day to confront him about the loss of his friend.
Megan, you have to be a strong person having seen 2 sons go to Iraq & knowing the dangers that could befall them.
Thank you for the sweet conversation that sad evening I called & cried with you. I don't know you or Jason personally, but I do know that Jason had to have been very special by having a special mom with such a strong Christian faith.
The future without Jason will be challenging, I'm sure. But we are reassured that someday we will be with our loved ones who have gone before us - it will seem like a short time for those waiting for us in Heaven, but here on earth it will seem like an eternity because we miss them so much. My heart is broken for your loss.
May God hold you in His arms of Peace.

Jason was an incredible person who was taken from us far too early in life. I feel so blessed that I had the chance to know him, even if it was for too short of a time. He had an innocence about him that was very endearing. He always had a huge smile on his face and was the first one to try to make you feel better when you were down. My thoughts and prayers are with Amanda, as well as his family and other friends. God bless you Jason. You are an inspiration to us all.

It is hard to put into words how we feel when we lose a loved one. I didn't know Jason, but he was a young man who had his whole life ahead of him. He was willing to give his life for his country.
His life had meaning and he leaves behind family and friends who will never forget him and many people who did not know him but will not forget that he paid the ultimate price for freedom.
I know there is great comfort in knowing that Jason is in Heaven with our Lord now.
God be with you and help you heal.

My son Eric Olsen was serving with Jason. When Eric told me on the phone of Jason's death, I could tell he was heartbroken. I cannot fully understand what the family is going through, but I can feel some of the pain they feel as a mother of a soldier in Iraq. If Eric were able, he would express his sympathy to Jason's family as well. I know that Jason will be remembered by many as a hero. And I will pray each day for his family and his fiance. God bless

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the Family of Spc. Jason J. Corbett:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
