Sherman Alston Obituary

Sherman passed away at the age of 90 on Saturday, February 25, 2012.

He was born to Willard and Margaret Alston in Tatems, Okalahoma. He was the youngest of his 7 brothers. He lived in Oklahoma during the dustbowl, running through the dusty fields barefoot. As a young man he served as a non-combatant during WWII.

In 1950, he met and fell in love with Ruby Mae Dowdy, and they were married on January 7th 1950 in California. From there, they moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where they had four children; Ron, Kraig, Meg, and Sherman Jr. They spent their married life moving around California, Alaska and Oklahoma until they finally settled in Oregon in 1982.

Sherman spent his life as a jack-of-all-trades. He worked as a logger, store owner, engineer, custodian, plant operator, artist, preacher, harmonica player extraordinaire, and many others, but his favorite job was being a Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa.

Sherman enjoyed spending time with his family telling stories of the good old days and singing songs. He was a deacon of his church and spent his life spreading the word to others, preaching to all who would listen.

Sherman is preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, and his sons, Kraig and Sherman Jr.

Sherman is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby Mae Alston.

His son and daughter, Ron Alston and Meg Paget

His Grandchildren, Luke Alston, Tanya LaCroix, Richard Paget, and Amanda Quatier

And his Great-Grandchildren, Wesley, Aspyn, and Kamea.

Although he now walks with Jesus, he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

I'm saddened to have read the news. Sherm and fmily I beleive were our neighbors in Anchorage in the mid 1960's. I beleive he was our school custodian at Campbell elementary and was very much loved and appreciated by all. I have reminisced about the past on occasions and the school and Sherm have often been a topic of reflection. Thanks for the memories,

Ruby and Family, my prayers and thoughts are with all of you. I will never forget Sherman. He has always been a very important special person in my life, and will miss him very much. I look forward to seeing him in Heaven one day. I loved him and to hear him play the harmonica, and learned so much wisdom from him in our many talks. He was one of a kind. Always his daughter, "Audrey" that he always called me
