Leslie Elaine Rinehart Linden, MD, died September 18, 2012 at her home in Anchorage.
Leslie was a three time Alaskan. Born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, on March 26, 1962, she moved to Anchorage in 1984 to attend UAA, completing a degree in Biology. She moved to Maryland to earn her doctor of medicine from Johns Hopkins University. In 1991 she moved to Kodiak to work as staff physician with Kodiak Area Native Association. There she met Joseph Linden, a commercial fisherman. They were married in October, 1992. In 1995 they moved to Pittsburgh where Leslie completed a residency in Family Medicine.
Leslie went on to teach and practice Family Medicine in Pittsburgh. Leslie, Joseph and their two sons, Graham born in Kodiak, and Maxwell born in Pittsburgh, moved to Anchorage in 2006. On their return, Leslie practiced at South Central Foundation's Primary Care Center. She resumed teaching with the Alaska Family Medicine Residency in 2008, where she became associate director of academics.
Lane lived with her heart wide open. Not only did she heal her patients, she cried with them and prayed with them. She knew them by heart and by name, not merely by ailment. As a teacher, she was rigorous in her demands for academic excellence, yet she engaged the medical residents as she did her patients. She offered her ear, her heart, and her sincere, soul-felt advice. They responded with love and gratitude. Their lives in service to others are one of her greatest legacies.
She was prolific in music, arts and crafts, including piano, flute, violin, water color painting, pencil and pastels, quilting, crochet, needlepoint, beadwork, jewelry and pysanky egg painting.
She is survived by her mother Selma Leman and step father Joseph Leman of Ninilchik; her sisters Teresa Bishop, Karen Shriver, Rebecca Jelinek, and Mary Miller; her brothers Donald, Steve and Michael Rinehart; her husband Joseph; her sons Joseph and Maxwell.
In accordance with her wishes, Leslie's remains were cremated. A family memorial service was held at St John United Methodist Church on September 24.
