Mary Allen Gordaoff passed away October 19, 2013, peacefully at her home in Anchorage, at the age of 92, surrounded by her family. She was born May 3, 1922, in Tatitlek, Alaska, and lived for a time in Cordova, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Lattela Allen; two sons, George and Gregory Gordaoff; two daughters Cheryl Anne Gordaoff and Roberta Parsons; brothers Fred, Andrew, Harry Allen; sisters, Lena Allen, Exinia Barnes, Jeannie James; grandsons, Brian Keith Gordaoff, and Christian Anthony Stanlge; and granddaughter Charlene Maria Stangle.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, George A. Gordaoff; her sons, Keith, Alex, Laurence Gordaoff; daughters, Elaine Lane, Patricia Green, Rhonda Kelley; grandsons, Martin M. Parsons, Taylor Lane, George Stangle, Nicoli, Brian, Jonathan, Wasili Gordaoff, Jonathan Gregory Gordaoff; granddaughters, Cheryl Parsons, Natalia Christen, Mary Duffek, Stephanie Gunderson, Yvonne Green, Cheryl Anne Johnson, Brittany Caudle, Anastassia Stangle, Margaret Clayton, Charlotte Lane Dixon and Roberta Steve Gordaoff; twenty-six great grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews.
Mary attended government school in Eklutna, and had a scholarship to study Northwest Native Culture in New Mexico, but chose to stay and help her sister Exinia raise her children. She was one of the last two original incorporators of the Chugach Alaska Corporation, and a past president of the Tatitlek Corporation. She worked very hard for her native people by being an advocate of the Native Land Claims Settlement and creating the corporations that have become the backbone of the Native People of Alaska.
She was a kind and generous soul, always helping any one in need. She was a fantastic cook and baker, and seamstress, some of the many jobs she did to help raise her kids.
Her funeral service will be at the St. Innocent Russian Orthodox Cathedral, off of Turpin, at 11 A.M. on Monday October 28th, visitation will be from 9 to 10 A.M.
