Born on September 19, 1952 to Phyllis Whitfield in Texas, Michael was one of 6 children who loved the desert life. He spent his formative years in Arizona and Alaska, where he showed a passion for the outdoors and flying. He later served in the Coast Guard.

He loved to teach business, help others with their business aspirations, and create his own enterprises that ranged from publishing to public speaking to ethics.
In 1996, Michael married his soul mate Heidi Hitchings who shared his passion for the outdoors and family, and together they produced two wonderful children, Morgan (14) and Bianca (12), who Michael spoke about with pride and joy to everyone he knew. Michael's overriding desire to "do the right thing" in life touched all who knew him and will endure forever.
