Martha Levensaler Obituary

Martha Levensaler, beloved wife of Dick LeFebvre, found the peace she sought on July 16th. Martha was an extraordinary Alaska conservation community hero, working on environmental issues that were her passion since coming to Alaska in 1989. Martha was born July 1, 1955 in Concord, New Hampshire, where she grew up with her sister Cindy Levensaler Little. Martha grew up loving the outdoors, swimming at the family cabin on Lake Winnipesaukee, where she continued to visit, spending time with family and close friends. To her New Hampshire family Martha was affectionately known as Auntie M.

In Alaska Martha served as Vice President of the Alaska Center for the Environment (ACE) Board of Directors and was an active and integral part of the ACE family. She has been a longstanding and extraordinary member of the greater Alaska conservation community since she came to Alaska to help clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill. She intended to only stay for three months but fell in love with Alaska's beauty, bounty and people, and decided to make it her home.

Martha worked for the National Wildlife Federation in Alaska for 12 years. She helped found the Alaska Women's Environmental Network (AWEN) in 1997, fostering relationship building and training for women professionals in the conservation movement. It was through AWEN that Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) was founded. She was a key mentor to the founding leaders of AYEA and worked tirelessly to help build support for the program.

Martha also worked for the Alaska Marine Conservation Council (AMCC) as Climate Change Coordinator in 2008 and continued engagement with AMCC over the years, assisting with board development and planning. Martha transitioned in 2009 to the League of Conservation Voters in the role of State Board Effectiveness Director, conducting state league capacity building for boards throughout the country, including close work with the Alaska Conservation Alliance (ACA) and Alaska Conservation Voters (ACV). She was passionate about her work and particularly her coworkers in the "Division of Fun" as they were known.

In addition to her professional career, Martha held many important roles in the Alaska conservation movement for several decades. She served on the boards of ACA and AMCC, volunteered actively with ACV, as well as serving on the ACE board.

Martha embodied what it means to be part of the conservation "community"; sharing advise and resources, mentoring, volunteering for every activity, and donating to a range of organizations.

Martha died shortly after her 58th birthday here in Anchorage, Alaska, leaving behind her husband and life partner, Dick LeFebvre; sister, Cynthia Levensaler Little, nephew, Seth Little, both of Epsom, New Hampshire; niece, Trois Montana of Pembroke, New Hampshire, and one great-niece and 3 great-nephews all of New Hampshire. She also leaves behind her dear cousin, Jeffrey Levensaler of Arlington, Virginia. Martha's Alaskan family includes her step-son, Scott LeFebvre, step-daughter Cherie LeFebvre Wagahoft and her dear step-grandchildren, Willem and Audrey Wagahoft (who called Martha "Grandma Freckles"), all of Anchorage.

Martha's legacy is her incomparable spirit and personality which was able to control the demons of despondency for so long, her dedication to Alaska and the conservation community and her infectious laugh that brought smiles to all. This legacy will be celebrated on July 28th at 3:00 p.m. at the Fox Hollow Chalet, located at 11801 Brayton Drive, Anchorage, Alaska. Martha and Dick's friends and loved ones are invited to this Celebration of Martha's life.

In memory of Martha, the family suggests that donations be made to either:

The Martha Levensaler Leadership Fund, c/o Alaska Center for the Environment (ACE), 921 West 6th Avenue, Suite 200 Anchorage, AK 99501; or Alaska Cares (caring for abused children), c/o Providence Alaska Foundation, P.O. Box 196604, Anchorage, Alaska 99519, online: providencealaskafoundation.org.

Martha was a dear friend. We walked to school together everyday from 4th grade through 9th. There were various routes to school and she determined our way each day. She arranged our social plans in junior high. One summer night on Bear Island she got the entire boat, the Mount Washington to sing her Happy Birthday, as it passed by, while she danced and swayed from the island. She was a leader from the word go. I valued her friendship deeply.
I lost touch with her after college. The last time I saw her was at her father's funeral. My very sincere condolences to her family and friends.

Martha shined with such light and energy. I was so fortunate to be able to work with her at the beginnings of AWEN while I was working for The Nature Conservancy way back when. Her energy and love for life and Alaska was contagious. I am grateful for the short time we worked side by side and am so saddened and know she is terribly missed by all who knew her. Yes - what a champion. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones - may they find peace in this painful time.

Martha was a champion for conservation, and especially a champion of women in the conservation community. My life is richer because I knew her and had a chance to work with her. The world is less without her here. I will miss her as a colleague and kindred spirit.

I went to school for one year with Martha in 1973 in Concord, NH.
Amazingly we found each other again here in Alaska and rekindled our friendship. I'm so glad we did and so sad to lose her all over again. My heart goes out to you Dick and all who knew and loved her.

Martha was a cousin I wish I had known better. I only met her once but knew we would have had a lot in common besides our name. SandyLevensaler

My deep condolences to Dick and her Alaska/non-Alaska family...Any thoughts of Martha have always brought a quick me a quick mental smile: What an amazing and delightful woman! Martha had the magical gift of being able to turn a somber meeting of serious, focused people into a light-filled "mini-adventure" - with her high energy, her laughter, and "this good work can be fun!" attitude about tasks at hand... tasks that her energy, focus and intellect would assure others could be accomplished, and would reinforce the will of her peers to get those tasks done! Her amazing spirit will always be here to lift those who know her, and her passage leaves behind a silent empty place for so many of us Alaskan and non-Alaskan friends.. Happy trails to you Martha..

Thoughts of Martha have always brought me a quick mental smile: In any meeting she could "charge up" a room of serious, task-focused people with her light, laughter, and her positive, high-spirited - yet still focused - energy... It seems she volunteered for everything! So many ery good things would not have been accomplished here without her involvement, leadership, and team-building energy.. What an amazing woman! we'll always hold her tremendous spirit close, as an inspiration and a guide.

What a maven...I will miss her love, care, thoughtfulness deeply. She did not set out to be a "leader" in the traditional sense but she led by example, through loving and listening, through her deep commitment to her work and universal values, through her recognition that conservation is about taking care of the next generation, through fostering leadership in young women and recognizing their potential, through being willing simply to stand up and pitch in, through her sheer enthusiasm that came forth in a bubbly laugh and grins. Thank you Martha and Dick for loving my family, giving comfort and a listening ear, and always inspiring. Your investments and work will endure but we are all so sad. Much love,

I will miss my friend and mentor dearly. She was a positive force in this world and those who knew her were blessed by her light, her love. If I could have had one more conversation with her, I would have shared these words:

Our family will miss Martha very much. She was a wonderful neighbor of many, many years. It won't be the same not seeing her tend to her yard, walk the dog or enjoy the grandchildren. She was a wonderful person and she will be missed. Our block won't be the same without her. Prayers and hugs to the family. Mike and Deb McIntyre

I'll miss Martha, even though I'd only seen her twice in 15 years (or so). I remember her from the EVOS days at PTSGE (FGHIJKL) (as we lovingly called it).
I'll always picture Martha in that Black Dress. And smiling. She helped me smile through some tough times; I helped her smile a lot (I think).
Bye, Martha.
