August Max Olson was born on Nov. 5, 1935 in Hubbard, Ore. He passed away on Oct. 15, 2017, in Anchorage, Alaska at the age of 81. He attended college in Oregon and graduated from Portland State.
After serving in the US Army Reserves, Max met and married Priscilla English in 1957. The couple had two children while living in Bellevue, Wash. The family moved to Anchorage, where Max worked as an insurance adjuster after the 1964 earthquake and then relocated to Palmer, Alaksa, in 1971. Max continued to work in the insurance business, eventually becoming the owner of Pippel Insurance Agency.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp collecting, and gardening. Max was a member of the Palmer Elks Lodge and of Ducks Unlimited. Max served four terms on the Matanuska Susitna Borough School Board as an elected member. After retirement, Max and Priscilla returned to Anchorage. Priscilla passed away in 2008, two weeks after the couple celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.
Max is survived by his daughter, Virginia McDonald and her husband, Kevin of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Alan Olson and his wife, Shawnie of Bellevue, Idaho; sister, Gloria Brown of Portland, Oregon; brother, Sidney Olson of Dallas, Oregon; and several grandchildren. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Janssen Funeral Home.
