Alan Gage Obituary

Alan L. Gage, 40, died unexpectedly Feb. 13, 2010, a victim of an avalanche while snowmachining on the Kenai Peninsula near Spencer Glacier.

Alan was born April 16, 1969, to Lee and Lori Gage in Anchorage and graduated from East High School in 1987. He went on to attend college in Oklahoma, Oregon and finally in Washington. He attended Eastern Washington University, where he earned a BA degree in Criminal Justice in 1994.

Alan returned to Alaska after college and began his professional career at VECO where he worked in a variety of capacities and then in project controls for nine years. During this time, he met his wife Dalon while they were both working on a Red Dog Mine construction project. He worked through a contractor for Conoco Phillips beginning in 2005 in the scheduling department and became a direct employee of Conoco Phillips in 2006, working most recently in the Capital Projects Group where he coordinated projects plans.

Alan had many friends in many different circles who describe him as continually upbeat, with a smile on his face a mile wide, always ready to help and glad to be part of anything that was going on. Known to all as "Big Al," he absolutely revered the Alaska outdoors, taking every chance he could to share his love of Alaska with his family and friends.

Alluding to his penchant for a good game of Texas Hold'em, Big Al's typical response to an opportunity to go snowmachining, hunting, golfing and/or fishing would be "I'm all in." His love of the outdoors provided Alan's family and friends many memorable and successful trips. None of Alan's friends ever had a bad trip with him along as he wanted to make things fun for everyone, and that he did.

Alan also enjoyed racquetball and softball, as well as participating in the Tok to Dawson ride on several occasions where he looked after many a "wingman." Alan was also a member of the Pfighting Kurds, a group of very special friends that began as a softball team and evolved into a big, extended family of very close, very dear friends.

Alan's helpful nature has been profoundly reflected during the days since the avalanche that claimed him by the hundreds of people who came together in his aid. In any like situation, Big Al would have been the first in line to help. Everyone knew that if you needed help with anything, all you had to do was call "12 gauge" and he would come running with his phrase "Let's get 'er done."

Alan was proud of his family and in particular his two young sons, Payton and Jarrett. He has already passed on his love of Alaska to the boys, who are very active participants in the outdoors of Alaska come rain, shine or snow.

He is survived by his loving family, which includes Dalon, his wife of 8 years, and their two sons, Payton and Jarrett; his parents, Lee and Lori Gage of Anchorage; mother-in-law, Dian Rhoden of Valdez; father-in-law, Jim Vculek of Anchorage; great-grandmother, Clorinea Spurgeon of Indianapolis; brother Brian of Big Lake; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alan Gage Children's Educational Fund, which has been established at Key Bank. Contributions can be made by visiting any Key Bank branch in Alaska or mailed to 101 West Benson Blvd., Suite 401, Post Office Box 100900, Anchorage, 99510-0900.

To the Gage Family,
I will continue to keep you in my prayers. I just wanted to let you know that your son, husband had a profound impact on me as a contractor with Conoco. Alan was the most respectful, friendly and down to earth guy you could ever meet. His memorial and tribute, speaks volumes to the type of person he was. God – “says you can judge a man by his friends and by the company he keeps”.
Well done my friend, well done!!!
