Andrew Hoge Obituary

Longtime Anchorage resident and attorney Andrew Ellsworth Hoge, 72, died May 6, 2011, after a short illness.

A vigil service will be Friday at 4 p.m., with a viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. The main funeral Mass will be on Saturday at 10 a.m., with a brief viewing from 9 to 9:30 a.m., and a reception after the Mass. All events will take place at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 2901 E. Huffman Road.

Known to all as Andy, he was born Aug. 7, 1938, in Willoughby, Ohio, to William and Grace Hoge. He graduated from Ohio University in 1960 and received a J.D. from New York University in 1963.

Andy met the love of his life, Carol Anne Sissea Hoge, at Ohio University and they married in Canton, Ohio, in 1963. After a honeymoon out West, and desiring to escape a record Arizona heat wave, they moved to Juneau in 1963, where Andy took his first job as assistant attorney general of Alaska and later became the first attorney for the Alaska Public Utilities Commission.

In 1965, they moved to Anchorage, where Andy worked at Robison, McCaskey, Strachan & Hoge; co-founded Hoge & Lekisch, where he practiced for 25 years; and later worked at Hartig, Rhodes, Hoge & Lekisch.

Active within the legal community and a recipient of numerous awards, Andy truly loved the practice of law and the deep friendships he formed with his colleagues and clients over the years.

Above all, Andy was a man of great integrity, kindness and faith. He was a devoted family man who loved all those in his family and extended family. He was one of the greatest Dads of all time; his unwavering commitment to his children Kevin, Anne and Jenna was shown through his constant presence, encouragement, support and coaching -- often at a never-ending string of Little League baseball and soccer games in near-freezing temperatures. He adored his seven grandchildren.

Andy and Carol's love of travel and learning sent them on many trips together, gave them great tales of adventure, and helped secure their near-perfect Trivial Pursuit record. An avid golfer, Andy was often seen on the links at the first thaw and was also known to dance a mean two-step with Carol. He was an active member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church for over 30 years.

Andy will be missed greatly by all who knew him, but he will never be forgotten.

Andy is survived by his wife, Carol; son, James Kevin Hoge and children Evelyn and Traian of Anchorage; daughter, Anne Hoge Milliken and husband Michael and children Ella and Ava of Los Altos, Calif.; daughter, Jenna Hoge Swaim and husband Derek and children Luke, Jason and Nora of Winchester, Mass.; sister, Rose Mary Hoge of Pepper Pike, Ohio; brother, James Hoge and wife Drusilla of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and children Michael and family and Peter; brother, William Hoge of Olathe, Kan., and daughter Elizabeth and family; brother, John Hoge of Addison, Texas; brother, Henry Hoge and wife Doreen of Willoughby, Ohio; sister-in-law, Gloria Sissea Schuler and husband Michael of Anthem, Ariz., and children Kimberly, Kristin and families; and sister-in-law, Elaine Macroglou of Scottsdale, Ariz., and children Lauren and Nikolas and family.

Both his parents, his daughter-in-law, Amy Lynn Denton Hoge, and sister-in-law, Barbara Hoge, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Alaska Foundation, Cancer Center Oncology Research Fund, P.O. Box 196604, Anchorage 99519, in memory of Andrew E. Hoge.

I had the great pleasure of working for Andy, during which time I learned a great deal. He was the best boss anyone could ask for, patient, caring, generous, thoughtful, understanding and humble. He took great pride in his work and it showed. He was a great man and I will always remember him for the endearing person he was. My condolences to Carol and your family.

My deepest regards to the Hoge family. Andy was the standard by which other regulatory attorneys could and did measure themselves. He was always a gentleman and his word was his bond. Our firm litigated against him for almost 30 years, and I could not have greater respect for another attorney, professionally or personally.

Carol: There is little one can say at times like this. Alida and I are saddened at the news of Andy's passing. We both loved and admired Andy as one of the finest persons we have had the honor to know and work with. I don't know why but I always called him "Drew" just to get his attention. He was a dear friend.

Andy & Carol Hoge were the first friends we made when we moved to Anchorage in 1971. We rented their duplex on Northwestern for about a year (they lived upstairs & we downstairs). We became close friends immediately. A few years later we began playing Bridge with Andy & Carol socially in a group which we continued to do for 28 years until we moved back to Southern California after retirement. Andy was one of those outstanding people who we all would want as a friend and his passing is a great loss. My sincere condolences to the entire Hoge family.

Carol,
We were very saddened to learn of Andy's death. He was a good friend, a very capable attorney and a true gentleman. He always had a smile and a cheerful word for everyone. Our years of practice together were a real joy. He was a staight shooter-one of the most ethical attornies I ever knew. A real credit to our profession. He is a great loss to his family and Alaska. Our sincere condolences.

Kevin, Ann, Jenna and Mrs. Hoge, I am so sad over your loss. As my first "boss", Mr. Hoge was not just an employer, he was a mentor, a friend and even at times, a father. I remember he would have me go visit Mrs. Blodgett and take her a banana (or something soft to eat). Mrs Blodgett and Mr. Hoge were more alike than he knew; all she wanted was the same junk food he ate everyday for lunch. Mr. Hoge was a man who touched everyone's heart, leaving hole that can never be filled. My thoughts are with you and your families.

I grew up with Sister Rosemary Hoge, OSU and remember her older brother Andy from our days at Immaculate Conception Grade School in WIlloughby,Ohio. The Hoge family was a beautiful family. Andy was so very handsome (and still is by his picture)
May the wonderful memories you have of your Andy give you peace during this difficult time. He is at home with his God and the rest of his family who have gone on to prepare a place for him in Heaven. God Bless you all.

Carol and Family, Jim and I were sad to hear of Andy's death. We have many fond memories of the Sat. nights, once a month, we spent together from 1972 until 1998 when we left Anchorage. Couples Bridge was so much fun, especially when Andy got to tell his jokes - he always had a few saved up for us. I will never forget his story of your family trip to the Super Bowl.... Andy was a wonderful man who loved his family so much- he will be missed.

I am so saddened to hear that Andy is gone. Andy was a wonderful mentor, whose lessons continue to influence my life and my practice even today. He was peaceful, compassionate, intelligent and wise. It was an honor to know and work with him. He will be missed by so many. My prayers are with Mrs. Hoge and the kids. Thank you, Andy.

Andy Hoge was a major influence in my life. I worked with him in my capacity of Right of Way Supervisor for Matanuska Telephone Association, Inc. in the 1980's. He was one of the most honest, compassionate and intelligent persons I have ever encountered in life and in the legal field. He was an excellent teacher and respectful of different views.

He was what every lawyer should, or aspire to be. I already miss him greatly. I loved and respected him for his support of doing what is right, no matter who is shooting at you. He is a great loss to the Anchorage legal community and to all of us who had the privilege of working with him.

To the Hoge family, I am a friend of Anne's from high school and he could not have been more proud of his children. They all have the drive, great integrity and kindness that they learned from their dad and mother. You all are in my prayers and so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful man. He will be missed by so many but his memories will be in the heart of his loved ones... Sarah Higi Burns (Rock Hill, SC)

You have my deepest sorrow in this time of sadness. Andy was my friend. I coached his son Kevin in basketball and his support for his children's sports was unwavering. I will always remember him and his beautiful wife Carol. We have lost a very good man.

Carol and Children, I remember Andy cheering the girls on at the Service High soccer games, especially the one when is was snowing like crazy! I also recall when he excitedly told us when Ann scored her first collegiate goal, a day I'll never forget because we had an earthquake that day in Anchorage. We will always admire his great love and devotion for his family, his constant support of his children's sports but most of all, the great man he was and will continue to be in the legacy found in his family. God bless you all and know many will remember this incredible man. Terry and Maggi Curran and Children

I met Andy in 1974 when I purchased Andy's Flying Service from Harold "Andy" Anderson. Andy was my Aviation Attorney from then on until I sold SouthCentral to the Lofstedt family and moved from Alaska. I can't say enough for the man's integrity and honesty. He was also a genuinely nice person. I remember Paula and of course Marilyn who worked in his office. Also very competent and nice people. My condolences to his family. Andy was truly the best.
