Barbara Kate Akisaqpak Curtis, 60, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018, at her home in Anchorage, Alaska. She was born on May 4, 1957, in Noorvik, Alaska, and raised by Walter and Violet Pungalik.
She grew up in Noorvik and moved to Anchorage, where she met the love of her life, Michael J. Curtis Sr. They were married on Aug. 21, 1982.
She loved the Lord, her husband, her children, grandchildren and the people of Alaska. Her life was dedicated to serving and worshiping the Lord.
Mike and Barbara started into ministry in 1983 and pastored at Wainwright, Kotzebue, Nikiski, Anchorage, Point Hope and Barrow, Alaska. Midnight Son Ministries was started in 1987. They traveled by boat through the Yukon River from Eagle through the villages of Emmonak. Although the Yukon River is where God led them the most, they provided support to many Alaskans across the state travelling to 30 or 40 villages each year. Her heart and passion for the Alaska Native people resonates in all the lives she has impacted throughout her life.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Curtis Sr.; her grandparents, Walter and Violet Pungalik; her father, Wilber Sampson; as well as her brothers, Homer, Jimmy, Steven and Brian Ballot and Richard Brannon.
She is survived by her children, Elesema Wigley, Charity Cook, Michael Curtis, Genna Carpenter, Manny and Jewel Curtis; her mother, Margaret Brannon; her sisters, Helen Roberts, Parolee McCord, Tina Ballot and Petey Pungalik; her 18 grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.
A Memorial Service will be held at Anchorage First Assembly, 1540 C Street in Anchorage, at 11 a.m., on March 10, 2018, followed by potluck. Burial will follow in Fairbanks, Alaska, at the Birch Hill Cemetery on March 12, 2018, at 11 a.m., followed by a potluck at JP Jones Community Development Center.
