Our beloved son and brother and lifetime Alaskan Bern Sean Wheaton died on Sept. 7, 2017, at Providence Extended Care Facility after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Mr. Wheaton was born at old Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska, on March 26, 1955, and lived and worked in the Anchorage area his entire life. Bern worked throughout his career in security and became much valued at a number of Anchorage institutions as a lieutenant, where he could put at ease the greatest of us as easily as the least, a scarce commodity in today's troubled world. He was a gifted and natural cartoonist, giving away his art as quickly as he drew it. He loved the Alaska outdoors, shooting and starry nights, enough to combine all three, even on the coldest of winter days. He loved his mom and dad, roughhoused with his older brothers, appreciated the comfort of his big sister and enjoyed the company of his nephew. Perhaps as result of his being the "baby" to his siblings by five or more years, he was deeply sensitive and nurturing to peace within his family (despite our weird senses of humor) and we, his family, will sorely miss him.
Bern is predeceased by his father, Sherman M. Wheaton; and is survived by his mother, Agnes "Rebel" Wheaton, both residents in Anchorage since the mid-1940s. He is also survived by his brothers, Lee T. Wheaton and Scott R. Wheaton, both lifetime Alaskans currently residing in Anchorage; his sister, Mary WP Hutchison; his brother-in-law, Scott Hutchison; and his nephew, William E. Piers.
A funeral mass for Bern will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at the Holy Family Cathedral, 800 West 5th Avenue in Anchorage. The family asks that donations be made to Holy Family Cathedral, in lieu of flowers.
