Lifelong Alaskan Bjorn T. "Ike" Holta II, 46, died Feb. 13, 2009, at Providence Alaska Medical Center from natural causes. He was surrounded by family and friends.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., with a rosary at 7 p.m., led by the Rev. Dan Hebert. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish with the Rev. Vincent Blanca officiating.
Ike was born June 22, 1962, in Anchorage. He attended Woodland Park Elementary, Romig Junior High, and West High schools, graduating in 1980.
Ike enjoyed the outdoors and fishing Alaska's streams and rivers.
His family said: "He was a very kind-hearted person who enjoyed the company of family and friends. His family and friends said that he was a generous person who would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need."
Ike was a member of American Legion Post 1 in Anchorage and was recognized for his many years of service in the areas of fund-raising, event coordination, and cooking for its many members and their families. He enjoyed a long and committed contribution as a commercial fisherman and crabber. His contribution of hard work and leadership has been appreciated and will be missed by Arctic Structures in Palmer. Ike attended services at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Anchorage. "He was a firm believer that no matter how difficult your struggles may be, that God's grace and love will always give the strength to persevere," his family said. "He expressed a type of humor that always lifted others and was never sharp or slighting."
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward R. Holta.
He is survived by his mother, Donna; fiancee, Christy Lowe; siblings and their spouses, Rob and Susan Holta and their children, Matthew, Ryan and Krissi; Otto Holta and Faye Bandow; Pam and Greg Youngmun and their children, Alex, Nolan, Vanessa and Mariah; Eric and Kristi Holta and their children, Dustin and Tanner; Jason and Mady Holta and their children, Kaylyn and Skyler; and Tamara and Clark Follows and their children, Sarah and Tabitha. He is also survived by additional family and friends in Alaska and the Lower 48.
Ike gave the gift of life to others as an organ donor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Life Alaska Services, 235 E. Eighth Ave., Suite 100, Anchorage 99501.
