Charles Wells Obituary
Charles was born in Anchorage Sept. 19, 1984. He grew up and attended grade school here. He had the opportunity to live in Hong Kong for a year as a foreign exchange student during his junior year of high school. He went to school for four years in Pennsylvania at the Milton Hershey School.
Charles completed two years of college. He served our country for four years during his active duty in the U.S. Army, where he received a special award for his good conduct. He was a member of the Theta Xi Fraternity and a Carnegie Mellon Alumni.
Charles loved the art of communication and practiced debate. He was interested in politics, philosophy and technology and was an avid reader.
Charles is survived by his mother, Theresa Sweaney; father, Robert Dean Wells; brother, Robert Daniel Wells; sister, Christine Wells Baue and family; grandmother, Jeanne Wells; aunt, Brenda Wells; grandparents, Charles and Judith Sweaney; grandmother, Elizabeth McAleavey; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
His family says of him: "Charles was child-like in his openness to the world around him, his loyalty to those he loved, and his passion for learning. His heart was pure and tender, perhaps too much for this world. Although sorely missed, his family is happy his soul has found rest in the arms of God."
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, P.O. Box 243302, Anchorage 99524.
A graveside service with honors was held for him May 6, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are with Legacy Funeral Homes, Bragaw Chapel.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since the world has had the amazingness of you in it. The world is less without you. I still think of you coming into my barracks room, with that smile of yours ready to make my day better. Wells, you were truly one of a kind and I talk about you to people who will never have the pleasure or honor of meeting you. I keep you alive in my heart and my mind. I knew Charles from Milton Hershey School, we graduated in the same class in 2003. He was funny, super smart, and always kind. This weekend is our 15th class reunion and although Charles won't be there with us, he and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. As we all gather for homecoming, we'll be having a small memorial to honor Charles and the other members of our class whom we've lost along the way. I pray you can find a small sliver of peace in knowing that even way over in Hershey, PA he has not been forgotten.

Charles, i dont even remember calling u that. You were the little brother of my best friend so many years ago. When i sit here thinking of Christine and your mother, my thoughts fall to you. We shared so many things in common and even both lived in hawaii, far away from the things we knew. Your memory comes to me when i feel weak and alone and i find the strength to continue on, not just for me but for my family and the ppl who depend on me. You were such a goofy little kid who impacted me in ways i never realized and still to this day. You are missed little one!

I am grateful to Chris, one of Charles' AFS friends from their year in Hong Kong together, for sharing this and other photographs with me recently. It is less than one week of the 5th anniversary of his passing, and I think about him a lot at this time of year especially the month leading up to his death. Charles I think of you often and not because of anything in particular. However, the other day when on FB there was a picture of your brother Robert, and I saw you looking back at me. It was his eyes, they looked like yours, the way you squint. The fun we had the night of your Prom will always be special, since you got there first, please prepare the way for all of us that will follow. It is a big job, but I know Napoleon can do it! I just found out about your passing TODAY.
I remember when you came to Milton Hershey. We spent many nights at the Old Senior Hall just talking for hours. You were so intelligent and I loved talking with you because just talking with you made me think and speak on a different level. You spoke with stars in your eyes, and was so excited about life. I never forget those nights at Old Senior Hall. I'm so sorry we lost you. My heart hurts. I wish I could hug you one last time.

I had the pleasure of meeting Charles when my brother was stationed with him in Hawaii. My first and lasting impression of him was how incredibly smart he was. I was telling a friend just today about a drink that they had in Hawaii that I used to like, and it reminded me of Charles because he was the one that introduced me to it. Charles was a great man, and he is sorely missed by many.

It's not very often that time goes by without me not thinking about and remembering you. Our platoon photo sits on my desk and I remember all the long talks we used to have whenever I made checks in the barracks. You were a very funny guy when your had the floor with all your crazy jokes. Man, did we have fun. You are always missed.

Our second of Charles' birthdays without him (September 19) ~
Happy birthday precious one. This is our second of your birthdays without you here. Your dad, brother, grama Jne & Gene, Larry & I sprinkled your ashes today into your favorite river. It was a fitting day, with tears falling from heaven joining with our own. The boxes I made in my grief therapy session representing your life before the illness and after...we all wrote stuff to put inside, and released it on the river as well.
Afterwards, we were going to have lunch at the Roadhouse, but Rob wanted to try the micro-brews across the street there, so we switched plans. Grama, Larry, and I played a game of 10,000 in your honor, each putting down a quarter on the game the way you and I used to. To top the day off, I had an ice cream cone on the drive home, ice cream being your favorite thing for birthdays instead of cake! I wish you had been here in person to celebrate your birthday with us. We love you so much and we miss you more than words can express.

Even though I was very young when I knew Charles, I will never forget him. He was always happy to see everyone. By far one of the most intelligent young men I have ever met. He is a shining example of how to treat others. I pray you will find a way through in this time Teri. Be strong.

Dear Teri,
I am so sorry for the loss of your young son. I found your page when I was viewing a friend's obituary, and saw a picture of your son's grave site at a national cemetery pass by in a slide show. I am very familiar with such pictures because my baby brother was killed at 26 in the military. I wanted to write you a note to let you know how sorry I am for your loss, and also to let you know about TAPS, www.taps.org, a wonderful organization that provides free grief support for anyone who has lost a loved one who served our country, regardless of how or when he or she died. The organization really helped me deal with my loss. I will continue to think of you and your son, and want you to know that I appreciate your son's service to our country.

There we sat together in the middle of the Denny's restaurant, crying our eyes out. You were always a good person charles...a better person than alot of us. You were a good listener, someone others could talk to an receive advise from. We had some good times, an some times where i made you as confused as all get out. It was a horrible shock to me when i learned this had happened...to know one of us was gone from this world...i can only hope that you have found the peace you so richly deserve for all you have done for all of us here. It may not be soon, or even years from now, but we'll meet again old friend, an when we do, i hope i can hold my head up high when we do an that i can share with you some great stories. Charles, Unfortunately the alumni association at Milton Hershey School only recently found out about your very untimely passing. You and I shared a few classes way back in the 1999-2000 school year. You used to get on me about not working to my ability. You were right. This world lost a great person when you died, and I will push to make sure that all your friends at MHS know about this guest book so that they can too can offer condolences. You won't be forgotten.

Wells, you were a good friend and someone that I will miss dearly. You knew just what to say to make me laugh and you were always there to lend a hand. Im lucky to have got the chance to know you and serve with you in hawaii.... this aint good bye its see you later.

As Grama Wells, I was priveleged to spend the first several years of Charles' life near him in Anchorage. I was able to see all my grandkids often and learned to know them all well. Memories were formed that will never be taken from me and although I wish we could have kept Charles longer I am so grateful that I was given what time I had. I love him so much and although I was unable to be there for his service, my good friends Jackie and Ben whom Charles loved was there in my place. I will think of him every day for the rest of my life.

Wells, it was an honor serving with you in Hawaii. You will be missed by all. Thank you for all the conversations we shared and the laughs. For your knowledge of the world and opinions I am a better person. Aloha my brahddah be with God!

Teri and Robert, I am so sorry for your loss. Since I heard, I've wanted to attend the service to lend moral support, but a sprained ankle has me grounded. I will be there beside you in spirit today, and praying for you during your time of grief.
