Connie Jean Calugan, 52, unexpectedly left earth on 15 December 2013. She was born on 28 August 1961 to Nellie (Pesterkoff) Laird in Anchorage, Alaska. While still an infant she went to live with her grandmother Lucille (Smith, Pesterkoff) Foster in Unga, Alaska. With her grandmother and family she moved to Squaw Harbor, Alaska in the early 1960s.

At the age of 11, Connie was adopted by Edgar and Carol Smith and moved to Sand Point, Alaska where she grew into adulthood and graduated from the local high school. Connie attended Alaska Bible College in Palmer, Alaska.
She moved to Ivanof Bay, Alaska where she met and married Ronald Calugan and together they raised a family of six children. Connie trained and worked as a village health aide in Chignik, Alaska where she and her family lived until they moved to Anchorage, Alaska in the early 1990s and later made their permanent home in Eagle River, Alaska.
No matter what the situation might be Connie always moved forward with a cheerful attitude and grateful heart. She loved her family and her grandchildren, always putting them first in her life. She loved traditional foods from the islands where she was raised as a child and would barter with family and friends to acquire a cache of the foods she loved.
She is preceded in death by her mother; grandmother; and adoptive father. She is survived by her husband Ronald; her children, Eric (Melinda), Crystal, Kyle, Anthony, Ronald, and Eugenia; her granddaughters Kayla and Lindsey Smith, Kaitlynn and Kiersten Calugan, Jessica Thompson, Lori Ann Geozos and Hailey Pearse; her sister Ella Kalmakoff and brother Jimmy Laird; her adoptive mother; her adoptive brothers Edgar, James, and Edward Smith; grandmother Frances Pearson; aunts Christine Nielsen and Olive Kalmakoff; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, 23 December 2013, a family visitation will be at 11 a.m. and a service will follow at 1 p.m., at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street, Anchorage, AK.
