Anchorage resident Darnell Jones Jr., 22, died of a gunshot wound Aug. 5, 2007, in Anchorage.
A memorial service will be at noon Tuesday at Greater Friendly Church of God in Christ, 6310 DeBarr Road, with the Rev. James Willis of New Antioch Church of God in Christ officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevick Pruitt, Cardell Pruitt, Joseph Jones, Donte Pruitt, Ishmael Schmidt, Darnell Jones Sr. and Lonnie Jones.
Darnell was born Aug. 8, 1984, in Anchorage to Darnell Jones Sr. and Tanya Renee Pruitt. He graduated from Job Corps in 2003 with an interest in culinary arts.
Darnell's employment includes Anchorage International Airport as a customer service representative and Alaska Taxi Service as a dispatcher.
He enjoyed singing, traveling, playing basketball, rapping, cooking and spending time with his son, Trevonte. When asked what he would miss most about his father, Trevonte said, "going to McDonald's, playing video games and basketball. We did everything together."
His mother wrote: "My son was a beautiful person with a big heart; his smile would light up a room.
Darnell was a very loving young man that protected and provided for his family. No matter what I needed, he would do anything he could to help out. It deeply saddens me that his life ended so soon, but I know he will live inside the hearts and memories of his family and friends."
Darnell is survived by his son, Trevonte Jones; parents, Darnell Jones Sr. and Tanya Pruitt; brothers, Kevick Pruitt, Cardell Pruitt, Joseph Jones, Donte Pruitt and Davion Hawkins; sisters, Monica House, Roxanne Weldon and Zytona Hawkins; and paternal grandmother, Wilma Neal.
"He was blessed with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that will miss him greatly," his family wrote.
Condolences can be mailed to the Pruitt family, 4110 DeBarr Road, Space D-6, Anchorage 99508.
Arrangements were by Walker Funeral Home.
