David W. Brockway, 49, of Wasilla, Alaska, was born in Jackson, Mich., and lived in Parma, Mich., for his first 20 years. Dave graduated from Western High School in 1988, where he wrestled, played football and became a certified welder. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a long time member of Spring Arbor Troop 144. During his years with the troop he traveled to many parts of the country and world, but after his trip to Alaska, he fell in love and vowed to come back and live.
Dave always loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping. After college he and a friend moved "North to Alaska." They filled a Ford Bronco with all their worldly possessions and lived in a tent while enjoying Alaska's beauty until they found steady work. For the past 25 years, Dave has worked as a certified welder/pipe fitter, electrician in the gas and oil industries. For more than the past 20 years, he worked at the North Slope for ASRC.
While on the slope he was a first responder, part of the ROCO Rescue team and SRT on North Star Island. He was a mentor to many of the "newbies" to Prudhoe. Dave loved life, was always willing to lend a hand and would drop what he was doing to help anyone in need, night or day. After his weeks of work rotation, he loved spending time with family and friends, and taking his airboat "up river" to his property on the Yetna River.
He and Shawna would visit Michigan to hunt and spend time with his nephews and family and friends as much as possible. Dave had a big heart; he worked hard, played hard and lived life with no regrets. He loved teaching kids how to hunt and fish and will be greatly missed by anyone who had the pleasure to know him.
Dave is survived by his mother, Diane (Ron) Conant; sister, Michele (Tom) Moulton; nephews, Jacob (Samantha) and Logan Moulton; stepsisters, Kaelene Medieros and Tina (David) Ray and their families; girlfriend, Shawna Oliver; and her son, Bryan Hamersley; he was "poppa" to Bryan's sons, Timothy and Osiris; and by his many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, William P. Brockway; brother, William J. Brockway; grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
According to Dave's wishes, he was cremated and there will be "Celebrations of his Life" in both Alaska and Michigan in his honor later this year.
