Long time Alaska resident Deborah "Debbie" Kovarik of Wasilla, Alaska, passed away on July 16, 2017, in Anchorage, Alaska, following a short battle with cancer.
Debbie was born on Oct. 10, 1957, to Joseph and Betsy Mitchell in Hialeah, Fla. The family moved to Alaska in 1968. She graduated from Service High School in 1975. Debbie worked in accounts receivable for Montgomery Ward, Nerlands, Yukon Office and Crowley.
Debbie gave birth to her only child, Justin Mitchell, in 1980. He was the center of her world, and they had many great memories that she loved to share with the family.
She married the love of her life, Paul Kovarik, in 2000. They spent many years together, making a home and a life for themselves on their small farm. Friends and family were always welcomed with open arms, great stories and warm food.
Debbie was passionate about family, gardening and animals. Nothing gave her more delight than a well tended garden with lovely flowers, and a farm with happy animals where her nieces, nephews and grandchildren could come and enjoy being with her.
When her first grandchild was born, she learned a new kind of love. She fought hard against the illness that was threatening to take her, and won. Her second grandchild was born soon after, and her love grew. She loved to spend time playing with the grand kids, who affectionately referred to her as Nana.
She is survived by her mother, Betsy Mitchell; son, Justin (Krystal) Mitchell; sister, Marie (Charlie) Goff; grandchildren; nephews, Kevin Elder and Joseph Goff; nieces, Brandy (Mike) Brewster and Jessica Goff; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph; husband, Paul; brother, Steven; and niece, Amanda.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on July 28, 2017, at Aurora Cemetery, 1096 North Wasilla-Fishhook Road in Wasilla.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Alaska Regional Hospital for their support and care in her final days.
Always blessings, never losses.
