Duane Eugene Utley, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away peacefully after a long battle with diabetes and its complications in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, June 17, 2017. He was 72 years old. He and his wife shared many adventures in Oregon, his childhood home, and throughout Alaska. A camping and fishing aficionado, he taught his kids important life skills like how to start a campfire in the traditional manner after a week of solid rain. Or, when all else fails, a hidden container of lighter fluid would also work those wonders. Although catching a fish was an infrequent occurrence, he still managed to teach his children how to properly clean and pan-fry a fresh-caught rainbow trout.
After spending most of the last forty years of his life in Alaska working as an engineer for General Electric, he opted for a warmer climate in Texas. Although he was a man of few words, those that he did utter made a huge impact upon his three granddaughters, Holly, Gillian and Abbigail, and they missed him, making the transition to Texas all the more difficult. However, he was able to spend his remaining time with his daughter, Julie, in Houston, and his wife, Ellen.
Duane is survived by his wife, Ellen Utley, of Anchorage; son, Michael Utley (father of the three granddaughters), of Anchorage; daughter, Julie Shehata, of Spring, Texas; and his brothers, Daren and Mike Utley, of Lebanon, Ore. The family would also like to express their heartfelt appreciation for his caretaker, Debbie McCloud, who spent many hours caring for Duane in Texas and truly became a sister to Ellen and Duane during her sojourn with the family.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Aug. 8, 2017, at Waterloo Baptist Church in Waterloo, Ore. All friends and family are invited to attend and remember Duane with stories and fond memories.
