Edith Lucille Springer, born in Aptus, Mo. on Dec. 30, 1923, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 6, 2018, at the Happy Valley Assisted Living facility, while surrounded by her loving family and the amazing staff. She is happily reunited with her husband of 54 years, John J., who left us in 2001.
Edith grew up in Potosi, Mo., and served as a civilian for the War Department in Alaska during World War II (1944-1946). She returned to Missouri and married John in 1947. They moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1949, driving their Willy's Jeep pulling a 27' travel trailer up the Alcan Highway. They built three homes on O'Malley Road, eventually retiring in 1979, to their five-story palace that ruled Springerville in Cohoe, Alaska.
She was famous for exploring cooking styles and even once subjecting everyone at fish camp to seaweed salad and salmon roe. Her family's favorite recipe was the "Little Red Hen Bread." Edith was an amazing artist and explored all manner of arts and crafts with stained glass being her favorite. Most of all Edith was known as a dedicated wife, loving mother, amazing grandma and loyal friend to all that knew her.
She is survived by her two children and spouses, Cindy (Glen) Smalley and Tom (Terri) Springer; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; her sister, Nancy Thompson; brother, Jim Cresswell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Springer; brother, George Cresswell; and sister, Melinda Schilinski.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held at Cindy and Glen's residence from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edith's name to Happy Valley Assisted Living, P.O. Box 425, Anchor Point, AK 99556.
