Edna Jean Cockerham, 57, passed peacefully in her home with her husband, A.J. Cockerham, of 37 years, by her side on Feb. 5, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska. Edna was born on Aug. 23, 1960, in Magnolia, Miss. She was a loving mother, a doting grandmother, a phenomenal sister and she loved the Lord.
She attended South Pike High School, graduating with honors, and continued her education at Prentiss Institute Jr. College earning an Associate of Arts and finished with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Jackson State University.
Edna began her career in March 1983 with the U.S. Postal Service holding numerous positions, including becoming the first African-American and first female Manager of Post Office Operations (MPOO). Through hard work and determination, she was promoted to Senior Plant Manager in 2014, making her the first African-American to hold this position.
Edna Cockerham is survived by her husband, A.J. Cockerham; daughters, Conchetta J. Cockerham and Chamira "CeCe" Cockerham; grandchildren, Zamirah Lael and Eviana Amirel Wells; siblings, Deloise (Dr. Javis L.) Odom, Dudley Fuqua Jr., Gillis (Shantel) Fuqua, Carruth Fuqua, James (Dianne) Stewart, Donnis (Rick) Henderson, Delbert Wayne (April) Robinson, Wanda Robinson and Russell (Patricia) Stewart, all of Anchorage, Wilma B. Cook of Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, Harriet Brown of San Antonio, Texas, and Brenda B. Norris of Magnolia, Miss.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Leoney Fuqua; father, Edward Brown; brothers, Donald Stewart, William R. Brown and Cliston "Man" Brown; and grandchild, Jaira Earian Wells.
A viewing is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., immediately followed by the Celebration of Life at Turning Point Christian Center, 1612 Ocean View Drive, Anchorage, AK 99515.
Her final resting place will be in her home state of Mississippi, with a wake on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at Cook-Enterprise Funeral Home, 4078 HWY 51 South, McComb, MS 39648.
A Home Going Celebration and burial will be held at New Star Missionary Baptist Church, HWY 568, Magnolia, MS 39652, on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018.
