Elizabeth Louise Toney, "Betty," passed away on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, after many years of suffering the effects of congestive heart failure.
Betty was born in Charleston, S.C., on St. Patrick's Day in 1940, to Calvin and Ethel Pigott. In 1960, she graduated from nursing school and began working as an operating room nurse. Shortly thereafter, she met Bill and they were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1962. They moved to Alaska in 1974, where Betty went back to nursing school at the University of Alaska and received both her bachelor's and master's degrees, graduating as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She worked in several clinics and with the Alaska School District as a school nurse, until she retired in 1995.
Throughout her life Betty enjoyed many different outdoor activities such as fishing, skiing and riding snowmachines, and golf. She was very active in the operation of several women's golf associations.
Betty is survived by her husband, Bill, of 55 years; son, Bill; daughter-in-law, Deborah; and her three grandsons, Ryan, Blake and Aidan. She is also survived by her sisters, Marilyn McCullough and Patty Cole. Her son, Bob, died in 2004. She will be missed and remembered by many friends as well as family.
