Longtime Anchorage, Alaska, resident Gail Christine West died peacefully on Aug. 11, 2017, at Providence Hospital, at the age of 73.
Gail was born on Dec. 11, 1943, in LaSalle, Ill., to Carmen (Munson) and Harry White. After graduating high school in Steamboat Springs, Colo., in 1961, she married Calvin "Butch" West on July 20, 1962, and moved to Anchorage the same year. Gail graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism in 1985.
Gail's professional career included roles as an administrative assistant at the Alaska Railroad, copy editor at the Anchorage Times and CRA Officer at First National Bank of Anchorage. She retired from a Community Builder role at HUD, but then continued freelance writing for various publications, including Alaska Business Monthly, in her later years. This last phase of her career was a fitting expression of her life-long passion for reading and the literary arts.
Gail was involved in numerous philanthropic organizations, including Soroptomists International, the Athena Society and Alaska Women's Hall of Fame. Throughout her life, she focused a spotlight on women and their contributions within her community.
In retirement, Gail and Butch split time between their house in Anchorage and exploring the country in their RV.
Gail is survived by her husband, Butch West of Anchorage; son, Greg West of Lafayette, Calif.; daughter, Cassandra West of Girdwood, Alaska; brothers, Joseph White of Girdwood, James White of Pittsburgh, Kan., and Keith White of Edgefield, S.C.; sister, L. Ardath Gray of Buckeye, Ariz.; granddaughters, Sofia and Maia West of Lafayette, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gail's family said: "Our wife, mother and sister was a courageous and loving woman who cared deeply about her family and community. She will be greatly missed."
A celebration of Gail's life will be held at 4 p.m., on Aug. 30, 2017, at Kincaid Chalet. A reception will follow with light snacks. All friends, past and present, are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Children's Lunchbox.
