Gail "Papa" Gear, 79, died peacefully in his home on Funny River Road in Soldotna, Alaska, on Friday, May 11, 2018, with his loving companion Clarice Jurrens at his side, along with his beloved Shih Tzu dogs, Mia and Matte.
A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai, Alaska. A celebration of life reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 21, 2018, at 6901 Carline Place in Anchorage, Alaska.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1939, in Bernalillo, N.M. He moved his growing family to Alaska in the 1960s. He supported his family in the construction industry as a home builder. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, snow machines, ATVs, puzzles and country western music. He enjoyed quality time with the Funny River community folks. Friends and family were always welcome at his cabin.
He was a very generous, gentle and caring man. He instilled a great work ethic in his kids. He was a very knowledgeable angler and hunter and enjoyed the Alaska outdoors. He always offered financial support to his kids.
Gail was preceded in death by his mother, Jettie Lou Gear; his father, Claude Garlin Gear; and his sister, Archiann Chambers.
He is survived by his sister, Jettie Eloise McCoy of Blacksburg, Va.; his children, Pam Anderson of Anchorage, Robbin and Loren Jacobsen of Anchorage, Kathy and Steve Hicks-Morgan of Riverdale, Ga., and Bryan and Cristi Gear of Anchorage; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
