Gerald Swanson passed away on Dec. 6, 2017, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was born on May 15, 1933, to Alvin and Dora Swanson in Tolley, N.D. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical
Engineering and served in the U.S. Air Force. He married Evelyn Folkers in 1960, and had two daughters: Dorea and Debra. He worked for the Corps of Engineers and the
U.S. Forest Service before transferring to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and moving to Alaska in 1966. He lost Evelyn to cancer in 1982. He worked on hospitals, clinics and schools in the villages while with Public Health Service. He finished his career with the construction of the Alaska Native Hospital in Anchorage. He married his loving wife, Rebecca Fisk, in 1996.
Jerry always had a welcoming grin. He enjoyed the outdoors and entertaining. There was always room for one more at the table. He was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
Jerry leaves behind his wife, Rebecca; daughter, Dorea Sun (Dean); daughter, Deb Crawford (Kenny); stepson, Bret Christensen (Tonya); grandchildren, Kyle Sun, Abigail Crawford, Reese Christensen, Kasie Cooper and Calder Christensen; brother, Robert Swanson; sister, Wanda Lindquist; sister, Sandy Martig (Paul); brothers-in-law, Otto Folkers and David Folkers, sister-in-law, Ollie Pfeifer (Jerry); and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank those who provided medical care during Jerry's illness and all the friends and family that visited him. You brightened his days with your presence, love, thoughts and prayers.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at 2 p.m. A celebration of life will be held this summer at his cabin on the Kenai River.
