Geraldine Brister of Eagle River, Alaska, died peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 6, 2017, with her faithful little dog, Misty by her side. She was being cared for at her home with help from Hospice and passed due to complications from Alzheimer's and heart disease. She was 75 years old.
Geraldine was born June 9, 1942, to Eva and Columbus Honea in DeRidder, La. She was the oldest of 4 children.Geraldine married her high school sweetheart, William Gilbert Brister Sr., and moved to Houston, Texas; they welcomed 3 children into the world. Geraldine and Gil moved to Alaska July 4, 1975 and never left.
Geraldine worked as an optician for over 40 years, developing quite a following. She excelled in dispensing fashion frames and helping people to find just the right glasses for their lifestyle. She opened the first Vista Optical in Eagle River and when she retired she was working on JBER at their optical store. She loved flowers and butterflies. She enjoyed her flower beds and lilac bushes every spring and had numerous African Violets in the house. Geraldine enjoyed science fiction books and movies and was an avid reader. She loved spending time with her family, her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great joy.
Geraldine was a kind generous person, she was always ready to help anyone in need. She never wanted anyone to spend a holiday alone and over the years, invited many to join the family celebrations.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband, Gil Brister; mother and father, Eva and Columbus Honea; brother, Billy W Honea; son-in-law, Tommy Harris; mother-in-law and her husband, Mildred and Max Clark; and father-in-law and his wife, Edinel and Mabel Brister; and her best friend, Evelyn Gregory.
Geraldine is survived by her faithful little poodle, Misty; her sisters, Patsy Mayfield and Kathy Honea; her daughter, Zenda Harris and fiance Patrick Gionson Jr; son, William (Bill) Brister Jr and wife PJ; son, Robert Brister and Wife Ellen. She has 6 Grandchildren; Venessa Brazfield, her ex husband, Heath Brazfield, Leila Taylor, husband Phil, Tommy Harris and Wife, Elizabeth. Corey Brister and wife Emily, Shaina Brister and Sarah Brister. She has 11 great-grandchildren; Joseph, Hannah, Kayla, Hope and Jacob Brazfield, Eva Shockey Taylor and Eston Taylor, Landon, Jackson and Mekenzie Harris and LillyAuna Brister and Baby girl Brister, due in January. She is also survived by neices, Paula McIntyre, Sharon McBride, and Sabrina Mayfield; nephews Terry Anstett, Christopher and Joshua Hatting and John Mayfield; sister- and brothers-in-law, Karen McMahon, Gary and Bobby Brister, and several great neices and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at 12 p.m., at the Valley Funeral Home, 151 E Herning Ave, Wasilla, AK 99654. Burial followed at the Palmer Pioneer Cemetery, Arctic Blvd, Palmer, AK.
