Gladys Mae Bertelson (Davis) passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at the home of her daughter, LuAnn Aikens, where she lived during the last weeks of her life.
Gladys was born in Bellingham, Wash., on July 31, 1935. Gladys married Delbert D. Bertelson on Dec. 11, 1968. Gladys moved to Alaska with her husband and children in September 1970. The family resided in Anchorage until 1978, when they moved to Eagle River, Alaska, where she resided until her death.
Gladys was a homemaker while she took care of six young children until the fall of 1974. Gladys worked for the Anchorage School District as a School Bus Attendant until she retired in April 1988. Gladys was a strong independent woman who was the family matriarch. Gladys cared for her husband Del, for six years prior to his death in April 2015, and looked after her sister Beverly J. Hendricks for many years before her death in March 2017.
Gladys almost always was working on an afghan, baby blanket or other knitted or crocheted items.
Gladys joins her husband, son, grandson and two sisters in death. She is survived by her children: Wesley (Linda) Ware, Malinda Perkins, LuAnn (Brian) Aikens, LuCinda (Dale) Williams, Deborah (Mike) Frost and Mark Bertelson. She is also survived by her brothers, Jerold Davis, James Davis and Neil Davis; and her sister, Elaine Thompson; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at 1 p.m., at New Grace Christian Church, 10891 Totem Road in Anchorage.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the name of Gladys Bertelson to the Providence Cancer Center or similar charity.
Arrangements were with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
