Grace Lydia Mathews died on Oct. 11, 2015, at home in Anchorage, Alaska. She was 32 years young. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 3230 Lake Otis Parkway in Anchorage. Viewing will be available to the public at 1 p.m. Pallbearers will include: Jason Johnson, Stephen Sparks, Jon Northey and Brendan Coleman. Grace was born on July 1, 1983, in Anchorage. She spent most of her life in Alaska, but also lived outside for several years in both Oregon and Arizona. Grace grew up as an Orthodox Christian. Larger than life, she enjoyed laughter, spending time with her family and friends, shooting at the range and helping those in need, especially those suffering from mental illness from which she herself experienced acutely. She had a beautiful smile, contagious laugh, glorious sense of humor and an intensely kind heart. She loved her daughter and her nieces fiercely; she will be greatly missed by them. Grace is survived by her daughter, Corrina Mae; her mother, Julie Mathews; maternal grandmother, Helen Heath; her sister and brother-in-law, Breandan and Helen Coleman and their two daughters, Claire and Maeve; along with many cousins and aunts and uncles. She is preceded in death by her father, Michael Mathews; and her brother, Russell Mathews. Grace, Russell and Michael all suffered immensely from mental illness that eventually led to completed suicides. Grace worked tirelessly while still alive to bring more awareness to this growing epidemic in the state of Alaska, as well as the nation as a whole. Their family is truly devastated to have to bury another cherished and beloved member. "She was my heart, and I was her heart." - Corrina Mae, age 11. A memorial fund has been set up through GoFundMe,, in Grace's name, to assist the family with funeral expenses and with Corrina's college education. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
