It is with great sadness that the family of Gregory Martens Gill announce his unexpected death on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017. Greg was born on July 29, 1952, in Glendale, Calif., to Victor and Sidonia Gill while traveling out of Alaska for two years. Although Greg was born in California, he was a true Alaskan, and would always tell you he was born in Alaska! His family returned to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1953. After losing his mother to cancer, in 1955, at the age of 3, he was taken under the wings of his many aunts. Needless to say he had a lot of eyes on him, all the time. Greg attended and graduated from West High School in 1970.
After high school, Greg worked for Brown's Electric. Greg was manager at Wes Gro Paint and Drywall Services for 15 years, and the last five years a partner of Aurora Paint. During Greg's free time growing up he was out camping, fishing, hunting and clam digging with family and friends. He loved family parties and was always the first to arrive to get the party started. Greg always insured his nephews and nieces had the newest gaming system and games. He also had a passion for card games, poker in particular, and enjoyed watching football. He loved spending time at the family cabin on Red Shirt Lake. Family, friends and neighbors will remember Greg for always being there to help and provide with whatever was needed. We will miss Greg's stories, helpfulness and presence at all our family gatherings.
Preceding him in death are parents, Victor and Sidonia Gill; his adoring aunt, Lorraine Martens; and his brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Barbara Gill.
He is survived by his loving immediate family: brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Diane Gill; and sister, Christine Gill; his nieces, nephews and spouses, Chris and Lisa Gill, Jon and Desiree Gill, Tim Gill, Matt and Sara Gill, Suzanne and Ray Hickel, Erica and Mark Roy, Jared and Amy Gill and Brian Gill; and his numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Greg will be greatly missed by all of his extended Martens family as well.
Memorial Services will be held at Anchorage Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating your time, talents or treasure to in honor of Greg.
Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
