Gustavo Rodolfo "Rudy" Saenz-Chavez, 59, died Nov. 11, 2009, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.

Rudy was born Nov. 5, 1950, in Panama to Gustavo R. Chavez and Soledad Santamaria Saenz. He grew up in Costa Rica and, at the age of 18, came to the United States with his family.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Inlet View LDS Arctic Stake Center, 700 W. 46th Ave., of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which he was a faithful member. After the service, a celebration of his life will be held.

He proudly served in the Marines for four years, was honorably discharged and settled in California. Rudy lived off and on in Alaska since 1982 and retired from United Freight in October 2009. He had a love for life, family, food, and the Alaska wilderness. He was happiest when he was with family and friends, making new memories over a good meal. He was kind-hearted, generous, selfless and outgoing. He loved to laugh and make others laugh and could always be counted on to help anyone in need.

Rudy enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking and watching good movies. However, his passion in life was genealogy. Rudy was a devoted father, brother, uncle, son and friend.

He is survived by his mother, Soledad Saenz; brothers, Fred Slattery and Roy Chavez; sisters, Thania Alfaro and Narda Townsend; and his children, Lobsang, Jairo, Gerardo, Cecilia and Isis, along with countless cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Corporation of the President, 50 E. North Temple, Room 1521, Salt Lake City, UT 84150, so that the genealogy work that Rudy worked on so tirelessly can continue to flourish. Please write "Rudy Saenz- Family History donation" on check donations.
