Harold B. Slwooko, 56, passed away unexpectedly at his residence after battling with cancer.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street, Anchorage, AK 99501. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Northside Seventh-day Adventist Church, 204 West 10th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501.
Harold was born on Dec. 17, 1960, in Gambell, Alaska, and passed away in Anchorage. He has traveled and spent time in Juneau, Nome and Anchorage, Alaska, along with other cities and states: Fort Benning, Ga., Tucson, Ariz., Seattle, Wash., and Denver, Colo. He even spent time overseas in Indonesia and Bali.
Harold's favorite pastimes included ivory carving, hunting and watching the Price is Right on TV.
Harold supported his family by subsistence hunting bowhead whales and walruses on St. Lawrence Island. The meat provided his family food and the ivory carvings from these animals provided the family income. Harold was a strong and brave man, and true but stern to his ways. On one occasion he was lost at sea with Vernon Slwooko's hunting crew for 21 days back on June 2, 1982.
Harold was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; mother, Grace; brothers, Richard, Joseph, Archie and David; and sisters, Violet, Esther and Angeline. He is survived by his sister, Carol; and brother-in-law, David; along with many nieces and nephews; and many other family and friends on St. Lawrence Island.
Special thanks to Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, City of Gambell, I.R.A, Seventh-day Adventist, Alaska Airlines, Bering Air and everyone who has helped our family.
Memorial Donations may be sent to: Harold's Burial Expenses on a GoFundMe account created by David and Carol Rodrigues.
