Born in Germany, Helga moved to Canada, where she met and married Helmut, her lifelong love. After having four children they moved to Thorne Bay, Alaska, where she had a fifth child in 1964, and helped teach the German language to the school children. Helga enjoyed the Southeast Alaska outdoor life. Helga and Helmut lived in Valdez, Alaska, and Hawaii before settling down in Anchorage, Alaska, in the late '80s.
Helga is survived by her husband, Helmut; daughter, Diane Hammermeister of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Peter Hammermeister of Anchorage and spouse Brenda; daughter, Susan Cantrell of Anchorage and spouse David; son, David Hammermeister of Stevensville and spouse Heidi; 20 beloved grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Her beloved daughter, Evelyn, preceded her in death.
Helga is remembered for her kind loving spirit, love for life and giving heart; she was truly an angel on Earth.
Services will be held for Helga Hammermeister at St. Mary's Episcopal Church Chapel, 2222 East Tudor Road in Anchorage at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018.
