Hope Nelson, 72, passed away on Nov. 9, 2014, while visiting family and friends in Scottsdale, Ariz. Although Hope's passing was unexpected, her final moments were spent with her sister and her four daughters, knowing their love and the pivotal role she played in the lives of everyone who knew her. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at 3 p.m. at The Bridge, located at 221 W Ship Creek Ave., Anchorage, AK 99501. Hope Nelson was born in Mile City, Mont., in 1941, to Nell and Claude McLain. She was raised in Casper, Wyo., and graduated from Natrona County High School. She was an active member of Job's Daughters, rising to the position of Queen of Bethel 41, Eastern Stars and participated in various clubs and community activities. After high school, she attended and graduated from IBM Technology School in Denver, Colo. Hope was a steadfast figure in Alaskan politics. She dedicated her life to passing on her knowledge; mentoring the next generation in various aspects of grass-roots organization. She was honored to be selected as an Elector to the Electoral College for the 2008 Presidential Election. Hope often showed her love and concern through the gift of food. As a former owner of the Alaska Pasta Company, Hope was known by many as The Pasta Lady. Hope will be remembered by family and friends for her quick wit, infectious laugh, generous spirit and friendship. Her happiest moments were spent with her soul mate Richard, family, grandchildren and boating and fishing Alaska's waters. She is survived by her sister, Claudette Kaye McCrary of Arizona; four daughters, Machelle Nutt of Oregon, Lorrie Stewart of Arizona, Holly Kelty and partner David Moreno III of Anchorage and daughter and son-in-law Kalina and Stacy Henderson of Texas; grandchildren, Brittany, Kiana, Carollee, Calie, Ariel, Triston, Fiona, Lila, Connor, Shelby, Bree, McLain; great-granddaughter, Lucy; and canine companion, Teka. Hope was preceded in death by beloved husband, Richard Nelson Jr.; her parents; mother-in-law, Erdine Nelson; brother, Dee McLain; grandson, Zakary Durdahl; and by her and Richard's two family parrots, Green Peace and Gandolf the Grey. An additional service will follow in Summer 2015 to coincide with the spreading of Hope and Richard's ashes. Hope will be deeply missed by family and friends.
