Jack Klein Obituary

Jack Klein was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1951.

After graduating from high school in Houston, he lived in Hawaii for several years, making a living as a carpenter while he enjoyed the surf, sun, and tradewinds. He was a natural, instinctive hang glider pilot with a flair for swooping the launch platform on top of the cliff at Makapuu. He met his future wife, Carol, when she was learning to fly and needed an experienced pilot to "check her out" for her first flight at the Makapuu Ridge.

Jack was drawn to Alaska in 1978 by the lure of adventure and high-paying pipeline work. Arriving a little too late for the pipeline boom, Jack was nonetheless able to make a living thanks to his common sense and carpentry skills. His fledgling company, Advanced Construction, took off (along with several roofs) because of the destructive Anchorage wind storm of 1980.

In Alaska, Jack was introduced to ballooning by a fellow hang-glider pilot who had been doing "glider drops" from a friend's hot air balloon. However, Jack was so intrigued by the balloon that he put his hang glider away and bought a balloon instead. He and Carol got their commercial balloon licenses in Anchorage and did passenger flights in Anchorage and Fairbanks for many years. They opened a certified balloon Repair Station, and Jack's handyman skills found another expression in balloon fabric and industrial sewing machines. In the late 1980s, issues with airspace, insurance, and the economy essentially ended commercial ballooning in Alaska but opened the doors to ballooning in other parts of the world.

Jack and Carol worked for two years as "balloon safari" pilots in Kenya. Thanks to the many people they met overseas, and the sponsorship of British Airways and Lufthansa Cargo, they embarked on years of "adventure flying" in many countries. Among Jack's most inspiring and influential friends was Peter Blaser, a Swiss lubricant producer and world-class balloon pilot, who introduced Jack to the ultralight, easily transportable balloon designs of Brian Boland and other outside-the-box thinkers. Jack added his own unique touches to those designs and began building his own lightweight systems, often embellished with his trademark "Alaska Flag" logo. Jack also developed an extremely lightweight yet powerful inflation fan, the "Kleinfan", that has a small but fiercely devoted "fan base" all around the world.

In 2012, after a serious illness, Jack returned to Hawaii with Carol and decided to build a custom home with a view of the sea and the mountains. He seemed to sense that this was his last "big project", and worked tirelessly to finish the house while he was physically able to do so. While bringing a load of flooring back to the house on October 22, 2013, Jack was killed instantly in a 1-vehicle accident near Kapolei.

Jack did things his own way, oblivious to the constraints of convention and fashion. Although he could not always explain the "science" behind his work, Jack could build anything out of anything and would have been the ideal person to be stranded with on a desert island.

"Tinker, sky sailor, carpenter, music lover" (in the words of a friend) - not to mention outstanding cook, - he has left a tangible legacy of beautiful and useful things, for people as well as his beloved cats. His kindness and generosity will long be remembered by all who knew him.

"Ua la'i ka nohona i ke alo pali."

There is tranquility before the face of the cliff.

Carol, I am sick beyond grief. My eyes are flooded with tears. I just got the message from Russell. Shame, shame on me for not responding to Jacks call for my attendance at the reunion of us "old guys". I am so sorry. Sorry for Jack's demise and sorry for my sorry self. I hope that Jack can forgive me.

Every comment means a lot to me and says so much about Jack. The fog is still thick on the path ahead, but all of your words are like rays of light that help me take one step at a time.

I am so grateful for the time, albeit brief, spent getting reacquainted with Jack, and getting to know you, in the past year. We shared memories of our youthful lives In the 70s. I didn't realize that I had such good taste in people at that age. Always an inspiration to me, and a kind and gentle teacher. I will think of Jack not only when I put up drywall! but also when I need an attitude adjustment. Such a great guy and such a good life you made together.

I only met Jack once when he and Carol did a stop over at our cabin in Atlin BC while flying their plane south, yet I feel I know him from the many stories and adventures passed on by Carol in our 20 years of working together. What a terrible loss and a great sadness. Keep up the spirit Carol and a little humor is always good medicine.

Wow Jack, you have left an extraordinary life! You have been a balloonist hero, a wonderful husband to your beautiful wife and even though I only had the chance to meet you whilst you were in NZ I knew you were never to be forgotten. A few weekends ago our beloved fan came out and we blew the cobwebs out and had heaps of fun. May you forever fly in the sky.

Dear Carol
Today I used the Klein Fan, a typical, absolutely practical device of our dear friend Jack. His approach was often doing things outside of the box, of course always - or mostly - supported by you Carol!
20 Year s ago we met you two in India, at the Bollooning Mela organized by Sir Vishwa Bandhu Gupta. It was love at first sight!
Our common passion let us experience wonderful adventures all over the world during the 20 year.
We will miss Jack, the very nice, soft and wild guy, and we are happy, that you Carol are coming with us in January flying your Alaska balloon in the sky of Burma - Jack will love it!

Jack called to ask if I could help him with a tethered flight he was planning for Saturday. He wanted to give children free balloon rides for the Christmas holiday. What child could refuse a balloon ride with Santa? It was foggy as we were setting up and the flight set for about 50 feet. At first only the people at the mall could see what was happening but once the fog lifted, cars were honking as they drove by, people waving and children lining up for a ride. I was helping the kids in and out of the basket but they didn't even know I was there, ha; they were all focused directly on Santa. Seeing the smiles on their faces, the joy in their eyes and hearing them shout Santa was priceless. Once in the basket they all wanted to give Santa a hug. It was cold but Jack, uh Santa, warmed up allot of hearts that day!

Carol
We all were saddened to hear of your loss of Jack. May the lovely memories you have of your life together carry you through your grief.

Little did I know when my wife and I met Jack and Carol that they would become close friends and share the passion of flying with me. As our friendship developed, we found out that we knew many of the same people. Jack lived a full life, and it is obvious that he was loved by so many. Looking forward to his spirit guiding us as we finish the last house that Jack built in Makaha.
God Bless you Jack and we'll be with you and Carol in December.

Jack always got there first, would invite me to visit and then teach me the ropes. First ripping surfboard, first black diamond run at Alyeska, first salmon, First time to beach a boat so we could chase a black bear up in a meadow; pull me by the arm and ask if I grabbed the gun. No Jack, I thought you got it. We laughed and ran back to the boat before the bear figured it out. My first night in Kenya he faced down that rouge elephant so we could get back to the house. It was always an adventure with Jack. He may have to negotiate with Saint Pete and winch me up to the Gates but by then he will know what wings to use, the best clouds and the bluest sky. Love you Carol.

Carol - your tribute to Jack is perfect: salt of the earth, capable, creative, adventurous, with such generosity of spirit and a gentle soul. We are so glad we were able to visit and celebrate his 62nd birthday with him in Hawaii in September, and to see the beautiful last "house that Jack built".

I will never forget your kindness and generosity to us when I was expecting our twin daughters, and how Jack always made sure I had a delicious meal, when I was eating for 3, if we dropped by after the all-too-frequent doctor's visits in Anchorage.

Only the good die young. RIP Jack.

So good to hear from all of you. Today I entered his workshop for the first time, and the whole thing hit me like a ton of bricks. So many ideas, projects, experiments, mementos - I felt like a piece of balloon fabric being cut with a hot knife, only the edges remain raw and ragged instead of nicely sealed.

I am so sorry to hear of Jack's passing. I have been out of touch but as a brief roommate, employee and balloon chaser, I will always be grateful for his friendship and wit. He chased his dreams and always amazed me how he did what he did. Died chasing his last dream maybe. My heartfelt sympathies for you Carol.

The words are so descriptive and so true about Jack. What a wonderful tribute to him in remembrance to a great guy. Jack will be missed. Not only do we have a wonderful cabin at Hatcher Pass that Jack helped build, we also have our first grandchild in February that will be named John with the nick name Jack. Every time I see our grandson I will remember our dear friend Jack.
