Anchorage resident Jack Maynard Nesslage, 78, died Sept. 1, 2007, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fort Richardson.
Mr. Nesslage was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Oakland, Calif., to Wilbur and Catherine Nesslage. He enlisted in World War II at the age of 16 in 1944 as a Merchant Marine seaman. After sailing the world, he moved back to Oakland, where he later met and married the love of his life, Alice Hobson.
Mr. Nesslage and his wife moved to Alaska in the early 1970s. He worked on the North Slope, and later for The Alaska Marine Highway.
Mr. Nesslage enjoyed reading and writing short stories.
"Jack's patience and kind heart will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him," his family wrote.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Nesslage of Anchorage; son, Max Nesslage; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Meg Nesslage of Palmer; daughter, Tracy Parent of Denver, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Davi and Michael Bateman of Anchorage; grandchildren, Megan, Julia, Hannah and Maddie Nesslage of Palmer, Courtney Nesslage of Alanta, Ga., and Tyler and Joshua Bateman of Anchorage; sisters, Becky Bellucci of Sacramento, Calif., Carmen Phillips of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Cathy Harris of Hayward, Calif.
Mr. Nesslage was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Nesslage.
