James Christopher Prairie, JP to most, and Jimma or Jimmy to a special few, left to cavort with the spirits of family and friends on Sept. 9, 2017.
He was born on May 9, 1960, and got his feet under him in Wauregan, Ct. After graduating with honors from Bryant College with a degree in Management, he ventured off to sunny California. As known from one of his best stories, a successful interview in San Francisco, Calif., had him accepting what he thought was a front desk position in a fancy hotel in the city, only to find out that the hotel was actually in rural Alaska. So, off he went and became an expert in Alaska tourism and hospitality and stepped up the service level everywhere he worked.
JP's taste grew to be quite sophisticated, but he could live on a shoestring. Anything that he had was yours and he reached out to care for others all the time. He gracefully shared his great talents in the kitchen, the garden, in the artist's studio and as a storyteller with many.
He called Anchorage, Alaska; Hawaii; and San Diego home, but he traveled extensively, making friends all over the world. His family and friends from the east in Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island; from the west in San Diego, Tacoma, Wash., Portland, Ore., and Hawaii; south to Antarctica and here in the north will miss his exceptional humor, creativity, generous heart and warm smile. A hui hou kaua.
As he wished, no services will be held. Donations in memory of James Prairie will be gratefully accepted by the Denali Education Center, P.O. Box 212, Denali Park, AK 99755, or online at https://www.denali.org/donate/.
