Jeanette Larsen, age 94, long-time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away on Sept. 12, 2017, at the Atlantic Heritage House.
She was born Jeanette Gurskey in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 25, 1923, one of seven children. As a clerk for Woolworths store in Chicago, she met stock boy Henry Larsen and they were married in 1943. Upon Henry's return from Germany after the war they moved to DeKalb, Ill., and then to Atlantic, Iowa, where they purchased and ran the Ben Franklin store. Jeanette resided in her own home in Atlantic until age 89. Her "home away from home" every summer for 20 years was in Anchorage, Alaska, with her son, Jim and his wife, Nancy.
During Jeanette's summers in Alaska she enjoyed salmon fishing on the Kenai with family and fishing buddies, as well as halibut fishing out of Anchor Point and Homer. Photos of Jeanette with her catch became a well-known theme in her small hometown and for her many friends and family.
While in Anchorage she enjoyed neighborhood walks, yard sales, Dimond Talkers Toastmasters, Anchorage Amateur Radio events, swimming at the YMCA and attending Zion Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her children, Jim (Nancy), Keith (Barbara), Marlette (Greg) and daughter-in-law, Vicki Larsen; as well as six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or the YMCA.
