Jo-Eve Rice Benedict, 69, passed after a long struggle with atherosclerosis on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.
She was born Ramona Jo-Eve Rice on April 6, 1948, in Vero Beach, Fla., to Byron Richard and Rosa Ramona Rice.
Jo-Eve was raised in Vero Beach and shared many fond childhood memories of large family get-togethers, spending time with her many uncles, aunts and cousins. Prior to her senior year of high school, she moved with her family to Albany, Ga. In the late '70s, she followed her brothers, Dick and Dan, to Juneau, Alaska. In Juneau she worked in various state government positions as an office assistant and manager. Highlights included time spent as a secretary in the Commissioner's Office at Department of Transportation & Public Facilities and as an assistant to State Senator Dick Eliason. During her time at the legislative offices, she met and bonded with her co-workers and friends, "The Steel Magnolias." In 2008, she retired for health reasons and moved to Anchorage to be closer to health care options and family.
She is survived by her three beloved brothers, Dick (Judi) Rice of Haines, Alaska, Dan (Kim) Rice of Anchorage, and Drew (Elizabeth) Rice of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; her son, William Byron Benedict; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a dedicated mother and sister and will be missed.
Per her request, there will be no memorial service.
