Johanna Grace Hill, age 88, passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2018, in the care of her children and grandchildren. She was born on Jan. 31, 1930, in Antler, N.D., to Frederick Larsen Fox and Ruth Julia Watkins Fox.
Johanna has a rich religious heritage. Her father was born in Bergen, Norway, of Norwegian and German parents. Her mother was a descendant of Puritans off the Mayflower, Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam, French Huguenots, Quakers, a Methodist Minister and English-Scottish-Welsh settlers. Many ancestors came to America in the 1600s.
She received a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education. She taught math and science in high school prior to her marriage.
She married James W. Hill on Dec. 30, 1953; they were married 55 years. The Hill family moved to Alaska in 1966. Her grandchildren enjoyed listening to her tell stories about her life. They particularly enjoyed when she told self-deprecating stories and laughed at herself until tears streamed down her face.
Johanna has great faith in Jesus Christ and instilled it in her progeny. She read widely and was a well-informed patriot. She enjoyed knitting heavy wool coats and crocheting afghans and clothing.
Johanna was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers; and one grandson, Andrew J. Hill.
She is survived by five children: James W. Hill Jr., Mark D. Hill, Julia A. Enzenberger, Jean A. Mikesell and Karla J. Lucas. Nineteen grandchildren survive her: Kathlyn Hill Carl, Adam Hill, Joshua Hill, Karoline Enzenberger Altman, Johanna Hill Marvin, Jessica Mikesell Brooks, Ruth Hill Faherty, Daniel Hill, Alyssa Mikesell Huntsman, Erynne Hill Nord, John Hill, Rachel Hill Crandall, John Mikesell, William Hill, Cheyenne Lucas, Sarah Mikesell, Koltan Lucas, Lorna Hill and Emma Hill. She is survived by 31 great-grandchildren.
She has profound influence on her children and grandchildren by her Christian faith and active pursuit of knowledge. Her family exults, "How great the joy when we meet again!"
A public visitation will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at 4 p.m., at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street in Anchorage, Alaska, with a service at 4:30 p.m.
