Joseph James Buckley of Eagle River, Alaska, passed away on Aug. 20, 2018, from complications related to diabetes.
Born on March 7, 1943, in Utica, N.Y., to Augustine and Emma Buckley, Joe was raised at the family hotel "The New Hibbard" in Bridgewater, N.Y. In 1959, the family relocated to Miami, Fla., where he graduated from Southwest Miami Senior High School. Joe served in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves from 1964-1970, and he fondly remembered those days his entire life.
Joe was hired with The Federal Aviation Administration in 1963 in Miami, and completed Communications and Radar Technician School in Oklahoma City, Okla., where he met his future wife Mary Ann. Joe and Mary Ann wed in June 1965, and shortly thereafter moved to Alaska. They lived in the Fairbanks, Alaska, area for 19 years and, while there, had three daughters. Joe transferred to the Anchorage ARTCC in 1983, settling the family in Eagle River. Joe retired as a National Airspace Operations Manager after nearly 40 years with the FAA.
Joe loved Alaska and he especially loved to fish and hunt. His hunting trips were shared with many special friends over the years, but one of his biggest joys was hunting with his girls.
Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Buckley; daughter, Sheryl (David) Stevens; daughter, Loretta Buckley; brother, Brian (Myra) Buckley of Bradenton, Fla.; sister-in-law, Wanda Evans and family of Oklahoma City, Okla.; granddaughters, Elizabeth Stevens and Hannah (David) Rowland; grandson, Liam O'Neill; and great-grandson, Victor Pandres.
Joe was preceded in death by daughters, Vicky Lynn Buckley and Suzanne Buckley O'Neill; and father and mother, Augustine Buckley and Emma Buckley.
