Joseph Jude Lastufka died, at the age of 82, on July 27, 2017, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.
Joe was born in Haugen, Wis., on Oct. 29, 1934, the second son of Charles and Ann. Eventually 12 more brothers and sisters joined the family. The family settled in Sacramento, where Joe attended Christian Brothers.
Joe was drafted by the Army in 1958. After basic and advanced training, he was stationed in Berlin, Germany, in the 6th Infantry Company D as the weapons squadron machine gunner. After being honorably discharged, he decided to follow his brother, Chuck, to Alaska, in April 1963. He drove his convertible Triumph Roadster, which he would stop to sleep in when tired.
Joe dove right into the Alaskan lifestyle: lots of friends, parties, ice-skating and downhill skiing, a sport he did with his grandson when in his 70s. He met his wife, Marie, in 1965, and they were married in 1967, and had two sons.
Joe had a variety of jobs before he became his own boss, servicing and fixing commercial kitchen equipment, which he did for over 35 years. After retirement, Joe would keep busy by walking his dog, lawn and snow removal detail, and various hobbies. Recently, this was working with wood. He made many miniature caches and won first place in that section at Fur Rondy. He liked visiting his son, Joe, for coffee and football and his son, Jared, at his cabin in Talkeetna, Alaska. He would take his grandson, Spencer, for driving lessons and lunch.
Joe continues to be loved by many: his wife, Marie, of 50 years; son, Joseph N.; son, Jared J.; "favorite" grandson, Spencer; siblings, Francis, Tony, Mary Ann, Rose Mary, Betty, John, Rita, Paul, Ken and Barbara and their partners and children; and many special friends, old and new. He was preceded in death by his mother; father; older brother, Chuck; and younger sisters, Kathy Lastufka and Virginia Strebel.
There will be a mass at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at 1 p.m. A reception will be held at Hilltop Ski Chalet following the ceremony. Burial will be the following day at Fort Richardson. In lieu of flowers, please donate or volunteer time at Bean's Cafe, the Alaska Zoo, the Covenant House or , 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and support staff at Alaska Regional Hospital for the loving care Joe received.
