Anchorage, Alaska, resident Joseph Slwooko Jr. died at Alaska Native Medical Center on July 25, 2017. Joseph was born on July 10, 1952, in Nome, Alaska. He also lived in Sitka and Nome, Alaska; Fort Ord, Calif.; and Anchorage. He was a renowned artist and carver. He loved hunting and providing for his family and friends.
In 1982, he was lost out at sea for 21 days with the Vernon Slwooko crew, and also Andrew Haviland. They survived by eating fish, birds, seal and rain water. He liked watching the Twilight Zone. He was also a guide.
Joseph was preceded in death by Joseph Sr. and Grace; brothers, Richard, Archie and David; and sisters, Violet, Esther and Angeline. He is survived by his wife, Kay; daughters, Cathy, Justina and Violet; son, Michael; granddaughter, Hazel; grandson, Spencer; brother-in-law, David; sister, Carol; brother, Harold; and close friends, Wayne, Flossy, Mark, Robert and Roger; along with many other friends, nieces, nephews and cousins on St. Lawrence Island. There will be a public visitation on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street in Anchorage, beginning at 9 a.m. Funeral services will immediately follow, beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial donations would be greatly appreciated to aide in bringing Joseph home for burial.
