Larry was a retail grocery man inside and out. He and Barney were great men and had the pleasure to be a partner in Valdez store.

My grandparents, Clifton and Mable Nichols, built the North Star Motel on Gamble Street, one door down from Carr's grocery (the log cabin Presbyterian church was between; it is now the Crossroads Bar). In 1956, "Grandma Nick" would often send me, an 8-year old, to the store with a few dollars to purchase ingredients for the next meal. She'd remind me that if I couldn't find what I was looking for to find Larry "and he'll help you." He always did. Years later, (our family had left Anchorage to homestead at Montana Creek) "Grandpa Nick" told us the story of Larry rebuilding his store in 90 days. My brother, Steve, and I believe that Grandpa, our uncle Claude Maglaughlin, and our father, Lloyd Lankford (owner of Sterling Service, the first gas station at the corner of Fireweed and Gamble), helped with that rebuilding effort. Larry's transition further closes the door on a wonderful pioneering time in Alaska and concludes this chapter of a memorable pioneer's life.

Mr Carr was certainly an inspiration and a model human being. I was fortunate to be able to cook him some healthy meals for a time in his Indian Wells residence and he was an inspiration to me to continue to grow my company (Native Foods Cafes) no matter the obstacles and that you can be successful as well as generous and kind.
My condolences to you Mrs. Carr as I know it must be hard, you were two very loyal loving Leos to each other! God Bless you and God Speed Mr. Carr!

Working for and knowing Larry Carr for ten years is one of the greatest periods of my life. A more honest and sincere man never served Alaska or Alaskans. He will be missed. My condolences to Wilma and the family.

For 13 years I had the privilege to serve as an administrator at Alaska Pacific University. during those years, I observed Mr Carr acting as a leader and guide on the Board of Trustees. His honesty, sincerity, and candor during some very rough times is something I will never forget.
On a number of occasions, Mr. Carr would ask me to identify a couple of students to work at his home during events at the house. Parking cars etc. Mr Carr always made it a point to talk to the students. His generosity was a mainstay, but his personal interaction and interest in the students was extraordinary! What a great man.
Mr. Carr you will be missed. Mrs Carr you are in my prayers.

A mark of a true leader is often known after their passing. Larry Carr was known by many Alaskans years ago and without doubt his legacy will be forever. Thanks for your wisdom and kindness.

Larry’s lifetime commitment to the public good is a model for all of us. He understood democracy as a vehicle of fairness, truth, and equality. His engagement in politics and his gifts to the community were not self-serving. Instead, they were genuine acts of generosity that forwarded justice, respect, and opportunities, so his fellow citizens could enjoy better lives. His kindness and openheartedness will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his family in this time of loss.

God Bless the Carr's family at this time. Mr. Carr was a leader in this community.
I remember his sister Mary, one of her sons Jimmy John, neighborhood friends Jimmy Brown and I drove out to the Eagle River store back in 1970 and it was the one time that I met Mr. Carr. It was then that he made an impression on me.
May God Bless his loving soul as it travels home. Mr. Carr will so be missed, and may he rest in peace now.

It's always easy to say...he's in a better place, but it doesn't make the loss any less poigant. His ability to find and keep friends, never forgetting them along with his easy manner, were just a few of the traits that made him a great man. I'm so sorry for your loss, Wilma. God bless you and the family.

Dear Wilma your husband will be greatly missed, a true pioneer of Alaska. He was a blessing to me and my mother as your housekeeper for 36 years but it was never like a job it was like family.

God Bless Larry and Wilma for their boundless generosity, especially to Covenant House Alaska and the Passage House Program. So many girls and their babies have successfully moved thru the challenges of young motherhood and parenting to productive lives because the Carr's gave the gift of the first home to The Passage House.

Dearest Wilma and family: I was so sorry to learn of the passing of Larry. I know that he will be missed by each of you but the important thing is to remember all the wonderful things he did with you, his family. I just wish I were still in Anchorage so that I could help Mary Ann with the funeral for Larry as I helped her when Stan died. But Ma. is a long ways away. But know that Larry and your family will be in my prayers. God love you--I do. Elouise Schmidt

I met Larry Carr in 1965 at Carr's Store on Gamble; my brother and I

gave ME a quarter, ending the argument. My prayers and condolences go out to Mrs. Carr and the family. Mr. Carr will be greatly missed. May God bless and keep you always.
