Long time Wasilla, Alaska, resident LaVern Fine, 99, passed away on Jan. 10, 2018, at the home of her great-granddaughter, Danielle, with her family by her side.
LaVern was born on Aug. 30, 1918, in Wenatchee, Wash., to May and Elmer Herr. She married Lester Fine on Oct. 1, 1938, in Camas, Wash. Together they raised four children. They came to Alaska in 1940, where they lived and worked at Independence Mine.
When Pearl Harbor was bombed, they returned to Camas.
In 1962, they returned to Alaska, living in Anchorage until 1975, then moving to Wasilla after she retired from JC Penney Co.
LaVern enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and snowmachining at their cabin in Petersville, Alaska.
She was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to four generations. She was a beautiful person and an inspiration to her family.
She is survived by daughters, Phyllis Riel (Don) of Grandview, Wash.; Diann Berry (Bob) of Wasilla, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; sons, Marty and Larry Fine; and grandson, Jim Fine.
Rosary and visitation will be held at Legacy Funeral Home in Wasilla at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Bogard Road at 11 a.m. on Jan. 16, 2018.
