Long time Eagle River resident Lawrence Charles (Larry) Rooney, 83, passed away from complications of lung cancer on February 6, 2013 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Hospital, supported by his loving family. A celebration of life will be held Friday February 15, 2013 from 5-8 PM at the Eagle River Ale House. A full military honors memorial service and burial will be scheduled for a future date. Larry was born in Philadelphia, PA, June 24, 1929. He began his military career at Fort Dix, NJ in July 1946. Technical Sergeant Rooney's overseas duties included a tour with the 1st Cavalry Division (INF) during the Korean conflict, three years with the Caribbean Defense Command in Panama, tours of duty in France, Bermuda and four years with the Alaskan Air Command. Among the awards and decorations he received during his military career are the Combat Infantry Badge, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
Larry met Ann in New York and they were married in 1954. The military brought them to Alaska in 1965. The family settled in Eagle River in 1971. Larry loved sports. He was an avid bowler, and coached his children's baseball and softball teams. He was a huge fan of the Yankees, the 49ers and Notre Dame. He was a supporter and fundraiser for the
. More recently, Larry enjoyed daily visits to Starbucks and ACS where he formed many friendships.
Larry is survived by: his sister, Ruth Geoghan, of Bronx, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sara Rooney of Eagle River; daughter, Patty Day of Eagle River; son, Tim Rooney of Anchorage; daughter, Kathleen Hickey of Eagle River; grandchildren: Kristy Day of Eagle River; Kamie and Noah Miller of Eagle River; Korey and Erin Day of Eagle River; Jon and Melanie Rooney of Seattle; Jessica and Randy Ecker of Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson; Jeni and Jamie Walker of Anchorage; Alison Hickey of Anchorage; and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Ann.
