Leah Michelle Ridgway passed away on Jan. 2, 2018, at Harborview Trauma Hospital in Seattle, Wash., as a result of a single car accident in her hometown of Juneau, Alaska. Her family and friends were with her.
Michelle was ... well, awesome.
She owned her own submarine, we could just start there. Michelle was a marine biologist and ecologist.
She explored her beloved oceans from Metlakatla to Barrow, the Pribilofs, and the Aleutians. She was a great adventurer and explorer; known by many and loved by most. From her days playing on Ketchikan's rocky ocean shores, to the day she left us, Michelle did not mince words or feelings; she fiercely loved her friends, family and the issues she chose to champion. Whether into fires or other situations, she ran towards, never away from, people needing help. She lived with integrity, grit, courage and devotion to scientific research and noble causes, inspiring love and appreciation for community and environment.
A shindig to remember and celebrate Michelle will be held in Juneau, Alaska, on March 11, 2018 - we'll bring the submarine and her dog, Attu. In lieu of flowers or gifts, and for details on the memorial, please visit www.michelleridgway.org.
