Maria Anna Bennett, 97, passed peacefully on Nov. 7, 2017, at home in Anchorage, Alaska. She was born on Nov. 4, 1920, in Naples, Italy, to Gennaro Comitale and Concetta Pellone Comitale. She worked during her youth as a seamstress at the family's tailoring shop in Naples. She met Billy H. Bennett, a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army, in Naples in 1944, during World War II. They later married in Naples, in March 1945, in a double wedding with Maria's sister, Adele Comitale, and Billy's good friend and Army colleague, Peter Gianopulos. They first settled in Helena, Mont., in 1946, and raised a family of three children. In the early 1960s she worked several years as a seamstress and provided custom tailoring to celebrities such as Louis Armstrong and others in Reno, Nev.
Married for 46 years, Maria is survived by her sister, Tina (Peter) Perricone of Chicago, Ill.; daughters, Marie Reisinger of Shipshewana, Ind., and Rana (Ray) Wilson; son, Tony (Rita) Bennett of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren, Steve (Anjie) Reisinger and Tamara (David) Bennett-Cotton of Anchorage, Nicola (James) Brownlee of Tucson, Ariz., Laura Gutierrez of Anchorage and Michael (Maggie) Gutierrez of Portlaoise, Ireland; great-grandchildren, Seth Reisinger, Gabe Reisinger, Donavan Bennett-Smith and Trinity (Dillon) Bonine; and great-great-granddaughter, Aurora Bonine of Anchorage; nephew, John (Phyllis) Gianopulos; niece, Renee (Roger) Poblacion; grandnephew, Peter (Kate) Gianopulos; and great-grandnephew, Michael Peter Gianopulos of Chicago, Ill.
She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Adele Gianopulos of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Raffaele Comitale of Naples, Italy; and other siblings who died during WWII.
