Maria Ursula Achivun Prince, 83, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at her home in Anchorage, Alaska, with her family by her side.
Maria was born Oct. 18, 1933, to Alfred and Emelda Murphy in Unuskut, Alaska. She married Thomas Pirciq Prince and had eight children.
Maria was a talented skin sewer, loved fish camp, processing delicious smoked and dried fish, berry picking and all subsistence activities. She worked as an assistant cook at the Nunam Iqua school. She was a strong, private, independent woman and lived life on her own terms.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; daughters, Alice and Rose; and sons, Paul and John.
Maria is survived by her sons, Frank Prince, Anthony Prince (Angela); grandson, Thomas Prince (Theresa); as well as her daughters Justina Shelton (Raul), Ella Gonzalez (Basilio), and Alice MacConnell. She dearly loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at Janssen Evergreen in Anchorage on Oct. 22, 2017; viewing is at 1 p.m. and service at 2 p.m. The final interment will be at Reindeer Camp, near Kotlik, Alaska, near her husband. We are grateful to Providence Hospice for providing our beloved mother with comfort and ability to stay in her home.
