Eagle River, Alaska, resident Marian Griffith went home to be with The Lord on Aug. 24, 2017, surrounded by members of her family. A celebration of her life was held on Aug. 29, 2017, at the Anchorage Baptist Temple. Marian was laid to rest with her husband, "Griff," at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Marian was born in Schenevus, N.Y., to George Umbach and Jenella S. Cole Umbach.
She was a devout Christian and began her ministry with children in 1954, as a junior girls counselor at Camp SASYF, Md. She also played the xylophone, bells, accordion and piano. Marian moved to Maryland, in 1956, where she met her husband, "Griff," at Camp SASYF. They were married on Dec. 16, 1959. They lived in Lexington Park, Md., for 10 years then moved to Alaska in October 1969. The family moved to Eagle River in 1978.
Marian and Griff became members of the Bible Baptist Church in November 1969, later to be Anchorage Baptist Temple. They began their Bus Ministry in 1972, with Bus #5, picking up boys, girls and adults in the Spenard area. Marian continued as the Bus Captain until Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017.
Marian was preceded in death by her mother, Jenella S. Cole Umbach; her father, George Umbach; her husband, Irvin E. Griffith Jr.; and her sister, Ellaner Umbach Hubbard.
Marian is survived by her children: Leila and husband, Arthur; Garth and wife, Janita and stepson, Colin; Leilani and husband, Jeff and daughters, Krystina and Jessica and grandson, Leland; Becki and husband, Michael and child, Tahnee and granddaughter, Mileena; Lexus and grandson, Declan; Anja and Anthony. She is also survived by her siblings Shirley, Victor and Imogene; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family asks that any memorial contributions be given in Marian's name to the Anchorage Baptist Temple Bus Ministry, 907-333-6535.
